And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Himeji
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring peak, cherry blossom late March to early April at the castle, with late May quieter and green.
Summer is hot and humid with rainy season in June to early July, best for islands, pools and the Yukata Festival.
Autumn peak, October is the sweet spot and foliage runs mid November to early December at Koko-en and Shosha.
Winter is quietest with the clearest castle light, and oden, oysters and crab at their best.

Best things to do in Himeji
Himeji Castle
Japan's best preserved original castle, a white six storey keep you climb for the city to sea view.
Koko-en Garden
Nine walled Edo style gardens west of the castle, best combined on the castle ticket for 100 yen extra.
Shoshazan Engyo-ji Temple
A thousand year old forest temple complex on Mt Shosha, calm and spacious after the castle crowds.
Himeji Castle moat boat ride
A short flat boat ride on the inner moat looking up at the castle stone walls at water level.
Nadagiku Shuzo
A century old Harima sake brewery with viewing, tastings and a brewery restaurant south of the castle.
Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History

Otemae-dori and Miyuki-dori Arcades
The castle framed boulevard and covered arcades together make the essential castle town walk.
Where to stay in Himeji
Himeji Station north side / Otemae-dori corridor
first trip, all-round base
Walk to the station in minutes and to the castle in 10 to 20 minutes, with most restaurants nearby.
Castle-adjacent / Honmachi
atmosphere and early castle light
Quieter castle town streets five minutes from the gates, best for photographers and a second night.
Station south side (Ekimae-minami / Toyozawa-cho)
value and onsen-business hotels
Slightly less scenic and marginally cheaper, home to the best breakfast and bath business hotels.
Think twice about
- Shikama / port / far-south industrial coast
Working port and industrial zones, bleak and a bus or taxi ride from sights, with almost no evening dining.
- Far-north / rural Himeji (Yumesaki, Kodera, Shiota Onsen) as a castle base
Lovely as destinations but 30 to 50 minutes north and terrible as castle bases without a car.
- Aioi / Tatsuno / Kakogawa spillover listings
Booking platforms widen searches to neighbouring cities, and a cheap rate 20 to 40 minutes away is not a Himeji stay.

- The keep interior is unfurnished wood and stairs, go for the structure and view not furnished rooms.
- Midday keep queues in peak season can approach an hour, enter at 9am or on a weekday.
- Same sake and sweets cost more in castle gate shops than in the arcades or at Nadagiku.
- Not every westbound Shinkansen stops at Himeji, check the stopping pattern before boarding.
Getting around Himeji: public transport and more
- Walk the flat 1 km from Himeji Station up Otemae-dori to the castle, castle in view the whole way.
- Take Shinki Bus 8 from Himeji Station to the Shoshazan Ropeway for Mt Shosha and note the last ropeway down.
- For Ieshima take a bus or taxi to Himeji Port then the ferry, checking infrequent boat times first.
- IC cards work on JR, Sanyo, buses and most shops, but carry coins and small notes for small restaurants.
