Things to do in Grenoble
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Grenoble
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Ski season and cold bowl. Museums and MC2 shine, Chamrousse and Les 7 Laux ski with night skiing.
Sweet spot begins. Terraces reopen, hiking opens, canyoning starts in May and paragliding is prime.
Hot city at 30 to 37 degrees, glorious mountains 10 to 15 degrees cooler. Locals leave in August and some restaurants close.
Arguably best overall. Students return, cultural season reopens, walnut harvest and stable autumn hiking.
Late November is the true between season, grey bowl with ski season not yet open and hiking season over.

Think twice about

- Village Olympique, Mistral and Teisseire
Southern grands ensembles with the same documented problems. Residential districts with no reason for a visitor to base there.
- Échirolles edges and far southern estates
Cheap rentals here are cheap for a reason. Avoid as a visitor base, especially at night.
- Immediate station forecourt, Place de la Gare
Caution late at night for visible street homelessness, drinking and low level drug dealing. Walk lit main streets and do not linger at 1am.

Is Grenoble safe?
- Watch bags on trams and in market crowds, and never leave valuables visible in a parked car at trailheads.
- Avoid the southern grands ensembles at night. Drug dealing is visible at the station forecourt and certain squares.
- Mountain risks are bigger: afternoon thunderstorms, cold canyon water and winter driving. Check Météo-France and start early.
- Emergency number is 112.
Grenoble travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Restaurants on the Bastille summit trade on the view. Fine for a drink, overpriced for dinner.
- Place Grenette's biggest terraces are for people watching, not cooking.
- Any traditional place serving gratin dauphinois with a cheese crust and calling it authentic.
- Sunday and Monday closures are real for restaurants and museums. Verify hours the week you travel.
Getting around Grenoble: public transport and more
- Walk plus tram. Five tram lines and TAG buses cover station, centre, museum, MC2 and the stadium.
- Price the G-PASS Grenoble Alpes against cable car plus two museums and a mountain excursion in 24 to 72 hours.
- Bikes are fastest across town on Métrovélo and the Isère greenway. Lock properly.
- Do not drive in the centre. Rent only for mountain days buses do not serve.
