Wine villages: Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Pommard, Savigny-lès-Beaune

Quieter and magical at harvest among the vines, but you drive to dinner and villages have few early closing restaurants.

Think twice about

Is Beaune safe?
- Beaune is a safe prosperous small town with no base area to avoid on safety grounds.
- Watch bags in the Saturday market crush and do not leave wine purchases visible in a parked car.
- Wear proper shoes for cobbles, carry water on summer vineyard rides, and do not cycle unlit vineyard paths after dark.
- Emergency number and hospital provision are in town.
Beaune travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Patriarche is a great cellar experience but a mixed wine buying destination, tour and taste, then buy selectively elsewhere.
- Walk in domaine roulette in famous villages fails, booked small domaines and in town houses beat a day of closed doors.
- Grand cru by the bottle on night one carries steep markups, the same wine by the glass or from a caviste is smarter.
- The Hôtel-Dieu at midday in August has three times the crowd, go at opening or late afternoon.
- Driving after tasting has legal consequences, French limits are lower and enforcement on wine roads is real.
Getting around Beaune: public transport and more
- Walk inside Beaune, everything in town is within the boulevard ring or a few minutes beyond it.
- For villages use a bike, a booked tour or driver, or a rental car driven by someone who is not tasting.
- TER trains run Beaune to Dijon roughly every 30 minutes in about 20 minutes, with TGV onward via Dijon.
- Taxis are not a hail on the street culture, book through your hotel and agree the return before drop off.
