Things to do in Vinh
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Vinh
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
The best window: dry and warming, the sea calms, the tea islands are green and Cua Lo wakes up in April.
Sen Village Festival around 19 May, full beach season, and the start of the hot Lao wind.
Peak beach season and peak heat, with city temperatures that can reach 40C. Swim early and late.
Typhoon and flood season, peaking in October and November. The worst window, with a dangerous sea and rained out excursions.
Cold, grey and quiet, with an unswimmable sea and a shuttered Cua Lo, but uncrowded city sights and Kim Lien.
What's on
- Cua Lo Tourism Festival April, opening around 19 April
The beach season opening at Binh Minh Square with fireworks and art performances, drawing tens of thousands.
- Sen Village Festival Mid May, around 19 May
Held in Kim Lien and Vinh for Ho Chi Minh's birthday, provincial scale annually and national scale every five years.
- Tet Late January to February, varies by year
Lunar New Year brings family travel crowds and widespread closures, atmospheric but impractical for sightseeing logistics.

Where to stay in Vinh
Central Vinh
sightseeing, business and transit
Walkable to Ho Chi Minh Square, the citadel, the market and the eel porridge breakfasts, with the airport 7 to 8 km north.
Cua Lo beachfront
beach holidays in season
The Binh Minh Road strip faces the sand 17 to 18 km east of the centre and is alive from late April to September.
Cua Hoi
resort stays and families
The quiet northern end of the coast with the Melia affiliated resort and VinWonders next door, and little else within walking distance.
Think twice about
- Cua Lo beach strip out of season
From about October to March most strip hotels and restaurants shutter and the sea is grey and rough. Sleep in central Vinh and day trip instead.
- Vinh station and bus station fringe
Nothing to walk to at night and the least pleasant streets in the centre. The Quang Trung and Ho Chi Minh Square area is minutes away and better.

What to book ahead
- VinWonders Cua Hoi: a few days ahead
- Pu Mat National Park: a few days ahead
- Giang River: a few days ahead
- Cua Lo Golf Resort: a few days ahead
- Vinpearl Cua Hoi, Affiliated by Melia: a few days ahead
- Book Cua Lo rooms ahead for the April festival opening, the mid May Sen Village Festival and peak summer weekends.
- VinWonders tickets are cheaper bought in advance on Klook or Traveloka, and check the selected date carefully at checkout.
- Pu Mat trips need a few days notice for guides and park arrangements, and Cua Lo golf tee times need days in summer.
Is Vinh safe?
- The main risks are traffic, extreme heat in May to July, and the sea in the storm season.
- Do not swim at Cua Lo in rough October seas and heed local flags and advice.
- For Pu Mat treks in summer, wear long trousers and closed shoes against leeches.
Vinh travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Vinh city alone does not fill multiple days, so plan one city and Kim Lien day and one beach day, then move on or go to Pu Mat.
- At Cua Lo, confirm the per kilo price, cooking fee and total before any tank seafood is cooked.
- Cua Lo out of season is largely shuttered with a grey, often rough sea, so base in the city from October to March.
- The Xo Viet museum without Vietnamese or a guide will disappoint casual visitors.
Getting around Vinh: public transport and more
- Vinh Airport is 7 to 8 km north with flights to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and overnight trains from Hanoi take about 5 to 6 hours.
- Grab works in the city but not out at Cua Hoi, where the resort arranges taxis back.
- Cua Lo is 17 to 18 km away, Kim Lien about 15 km, the tea islands about 50 km and Pu Mat about 120 to 130 km.
- Hire a car with driver through your hotel for excursion days, roughly 1,000,000 to 1,500,000 VND a day for nearer trips.
