And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Dong Hoi
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
The sweet spot, settled dry weather, a swimmable sea and stable cave conditions before the fiercest heat.
Dry beach season from February to August, with June to August bringing peak heat and July bringing peak domestic crowds.
Still hot and often fine, but central coast storm risk climbs steeply and plans need flexibility.
Worst months, the heart of typhoon and flood season with the heaviest rain of the year and cave and road closures.
Cool and damp at 15 to 18 degrees, the sea is a look not a swim, with empty sights, low prices and Tet in season.

Sand and the Truong Phap seafood row on the doorstep, about 2 km from the city centre.
Bao Ninh Peninsula

Think twice about
- Far northern Truong Phap and Quang Phu fringe
Unfinished, empty developments with almost no open food at night and a taxi needed for every meal. Not unsafe, just desolate as a base.
- Unfinished resort stretches of Bao Ninh
Stalled hotel shells make for a deserted walk home and no walkable dining. Stay at a functioning resort or in the centre instead.

- Agree the per kilo price and cooking charge at any live tank seafood restaurant before anything is weighed.
- Recent visitors report the Dong Hoi Night Market closed, possibly permanently, so do not plan an evening around it.
- Mooc Spring stacks extra charges on entry and crowds at weekends, so go early on a weekday or choose Dark Cave.
- Avoid midday sightseeing, as the 11am to 3pm heat empties the beaches, dunes and citadel.
