Things to do in Bac Lieu
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Bac Lieu
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season, the best time for a first trip, with firm roads and the clearest coastal days.
Wet season with daily rain and local flooding. Compensations are longan harvest and bird breeding.
Bird breeding peaks at the sanctuary and longan harvest falls around the eighth lunar month.
Tet brings atmosphere plus travel chaos and closures around the holiday itself.

Think twice about

What to book ahead
- Bac Lieu Salt Farm: a few days ahead

- Book Hotel Cong Tu Bac Lieu for weekends, Tet and festival dates, with New Palace as fallback.
- Book rooms and a driver days ahead for the early March Tac Say pilgrimage and the Quan Am festival.
- Ask your hotel on arrival about Cao Van Lau Theater performances and book any ticket the same day.
- Confirm the bird sanctuary is open with your hotel the day before you ride out.
Is Bac Lieu safe?
- Highway 1A is a truck road and unlit in stretches. Do not ride it after dark.
- Carry repellent and water for the sanctuary, orchards and coast, and watch children near canals and pools.
- Wet season rain can flood low roads and orchard lanes within an hour. Keep afternoons loose May to November.
Bac Lieu travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Nha Mat is an artificial beach. The natural sea is silty, shallow and muddy at low tide.
- The wind farm alone at midday disappoints. Do it at golden hour inside the coastal loop.
- Agree seafood species, size and per kilo price and watch the weighing before cooking.
- The Prince house without the guided story underwhelms. The anecdotes are the exhibit.
Getting around Bac Lieu: public transport and more
- Walk the centre and use taxis or Grab in town, cheap for every hop.
- Hire a car with driver through your hotel for the coastal loop and the Tac Say run.
- Ho Chi Minh City is about 288 km, Soc Trang about an hour and Ca Mau about an hour and a half by road.
- Rent a motorbike only with helmet and licence, and start early to beat heat and rain.
