Things to do in Ushguli
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ushguli
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Deep winter: snowbound, road often impassable, many guesthouses closed, trekking and glacier hike not on.
Thaw and mud: road reopens unevenly, landslide and washout risk is highest, late May is the earliest sensible start.
Early summer: glacier hike opens and trek season starts late in the month, villages still quiet, nights cold.
Peak trekking, plus the Svaneti International Film Festival DALI in Ushguli in 2026; book beds and jeeps well ahead.
Busiest month, best chance of settled Shkhara weather, fullest guesthouses and most day-trippers.
Often the best month: stable light, early autumn colour, fewer crowds, routes usually open into mid or late September.
Shoulder closing down: early October can be fine, then snow returns, guesthouses close and the Lentekhi route shuts.
Winter closes in: road unreliable to impassable and most tourism stops. Do not plan a first visit now.

Is Ushguli safe?
- Ushguli is in Georgia's far northwest mountains, far from the Russian-occupied regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, which sit on no route here.
- The real risks are the mountain road, landslides, river water, rockfall below Shkhara, altitude and distance from a hospital.
- Get insurance covering trekking at altitude and evacuation, and leave your hiking plan and return time with your host.
Ushguli travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- A one hour day trip from Mestia is the main trap: five to six hours on the road for one photo. Sleep at least one night.
- Hotel language on listings does not mean hotel standards; everywhere here is guesthouse standard at heart.
- Do not climb towers without the owning family's permission, and do not treat homes and farmyards as a museum.
Getting around Ushguli: public transport and more
- Hire a 4x4 with a local driver in Mestia or share a jeep arranged by a guesthouse; plan 2.5 to 3 hours for about 45 km.
- There is no reliable scheduled public transport to plan around; an occasional summer shared van may run when full.
- Walk everywhere between the four clusters, and carry a torch because there are no street lights.
- Download offline maps before Mestia, because mobile signal in Ushguli and on the trails is patchy.
