Things to do in Mestia
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Mestia
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Trekking season opens mid to late June. Wildflowers, long days, waterfalls at their best, crowds still building.
Peak season. Everything open including the full trek, paragliding and the film festival. Book ahead and start hikes at dawn.
Best single month for most first trips. Trails open, crowds thinning, autumn colour starting, superb light.
Autumn colour and quiet trails early in the month, but guesthouses begin closing and the trek turns weather dependent.
Ski season at Hatsvali and Tetnuldi. February is the sweet spot. Christmas and New Year are busy and expensive.
Shoulder season. March can still ski well. April and May bring waterfalls and green valleys but high passes stay snowbound.
Quiet, cold and between seasons. Giorgoba on 23 November is the cultural pick, but trekking is over and skiing may not run.

Ushguli
one or two nights inside the tower cluster
Waking beneath Shkhara after day trip cars leave, with basic facilities and an unreliable road in.
Think twice about
- Isolated highway guesthouses between villages
Not unsafe but stranded without a car, with no restaurant cluster, driver pool or evening life.
- Ushguli as a base in winter or a storm window
The road is the risk. When it closes you are there until it opens and onward flights do not wait.
- Immediate Seti Square frontage
Early marshrutka and 4x4 departures and cafe noise trouble light sleepers in peak season. Move two streets back.

Is Mestia safe?
- Mountains are the main risk. Start early, carry layers and waterproofs, use offline maps and tell your guesthouse your route.
- Carry your passport on Mazeri and border adjacent hikes, where border guards check.
- Free roaming dogs and cows are a daily reality. Do not run, do not pet working dogs and give cattle the lane.
- Use experienced local drivers on the Zugdidi to Mestia and Mestia to Ushguli roads and never pressure them in bad conditions.
- Freeride terrain at Tetnuldi is serious. Avalanche equipment and a guide are not optional off piste.
Mestia travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Rushing Svaneti in a single night with a jeep dash to Ushguli. Minimum worthwhile is 3 nights in Mestia.
- Koruldi as a jeep only checkbox. The lakes alone do not justify the price, the ridge views in clear weather do.
- Hotel Posta at Gistola prices without reading the service split. Location is not the same as luxury.
- Underestimating distances. In Svaneti 16 km can mean 1600 m of ascent attached.
- Building a trip on the Vanilla Sky flight with no road plan B.
- Tetnuldi without buffer days in winter. Opening information is unreliable and flexibility is the product.
- Eating only on Seti Square. The best meals are in guesthouses and one street back in the old town.
Getting around Mestia: public transport and more
- Mestia itself is walkable. Taxis are arranged through guesthouses with prices agreed in advance.
- Marshrutkas run via Zugdidi and from Kutaisi. Vans often leave when full as much as when scheduled.
- Vanilla Sky flies from Natakhtari near Tbilisi and from Kutaisi but cancels for weather. Always keep a road plan B.
- Cash in lari is king outside larger hotels. Use Mestia ATMs before Ushguli or the trek.
- Download offline maps before trails. Magti has the best mountain coverage and signal is patchy in Ushguli.
