And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Svaneti
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Season opens mid month. Stages, forest trek and glacier walks open, passes can still hold snow early in the month.
Peak season. Everything open, Adishi hardest to book, Kvirikoba on 28 July and Lichaanishoba in Adishi in August.
Best single month for most regional trips. Routes usually open, crowds thinning, cold nights at Adishi altitude.
Early October fine in Becho and Latali, then trek guesthouses close and passes become weather gambles.
Thaw and high water. Waterfalls at full force but river crossings dangerous and high routes not yet reliable.
Deep winter beyond Mestia. High villages can be cut off, routes closed in practice, Lamproba in February with a host.
Winter sets in. Giorgoba on 23 November, roads unreliable and no first regional visit should be planned now.
What's on
- Kvirikoba 28 July
All Svan pilgrimage at Lagurka above Khe in Kala. Attend only with a guide or host and genuine respect.
- Lamproba February, date varies by village and year
Torch festival honouring ancestors in Svan villages. Go only with a local host who can place you correctly.
- Lichaanishoba August, exact date varies by year
Adishi annual feast day hosted by a rotating family, drawing former villagers back. A host question, not a ticket.
- Giorgoba 23 November
St George's Day, observed in Svan villages with morning mass and family feasting.

Think twice about
- Adishi and Khalde in winter or a storm window
Access is on foot or by horse with tracks that wash out and close. When conditions turn you are there until they improve.
- Any base dependent on the Latpari or Lentekhi road outside summer
The southern route out of Ushguli is a warm season route only and snow closes it for half the year.
- Isolated roadside stops between villages without a car
Not unsafe but stranded, with no cafe, no driver pool and a negotiation for every meal and onward leg.

Is Svaneti safe?
- The real risks are mountain roads, rockfall and washouts, river crossings, altitude to 2,700 m on passes and winter isolation of high villages.
- Carry your passport on Dolra and Ushba valley walks, start early, use offline maps and leave your route with your host.
Svaneti travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Treating Adishi as a drive through photo stop. Its value is the walk in and the night there.
- Paying for a church circuit that promises open doors. No operator can guarantee a custodian in a farm village.
- Underestimating stages. The 9.5 km to Adishi carries about 876 m of climbing with it.
- Going to Laila or Tetnuldi summit on Chalaadi confidence. They are a different category of undertaking.
Getting around Svaneti: public transport and more
- Every regional trip runs through Mestia. Mazeri is about 25 minutes by driver, Latali is by road west of Mestia, and the Ushguli road is local driver 4x4 only.
- Adishi, Khalde and the trek villages are reached on foot or by horse. Any 4x4 track to Adishi is conditional until a host confirms it that week.
- There is no public transport network between villages to plan around. Your guesthouse host is your transport desk.
- Bring GEL in small notes from Mestia. There are no ATMs to rely on in Mazeri, Latali, Adishi or Kala.
