Is Ulaangom safe?
- A nationwide gasoline shortage in August 2026 affected travel outside Ulaanbaatar, so check the current fuel picture before long rural drives.
- Cell phone and emergency services may not exist in rural areas. Carry evacuation insurance for trekking and tell someone your route.
- Emergency numbers are 101 fire, 102 police and 103 ambulance, and responders may not speak English.
- Winter cold is extreme, with January lows around minus 36 C. Do not attempt winter excursions without proper gear and local support.
Ulaangom travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not plan a same day international connection after the Ulaangom flight, as services are infrequent and weather can cancel them.
- Do not assume card payment, shade, drinking water or mobile coverage at the salt lakes. Carry cash, water and sun protection.
- Do not treat headline lake distances as door to shore times. Sandy final stretches to Khyargas camps can take hours.
Getting around Ulaangom: public transport and more
- Fly Ulaanbaatar to Ulaangom in about 3 hours on an infrequent domestic service, or allow 20 to 22 hours by road for about 1,363 km.
- Hire a local driver with a reliable 4WD for Uvs Lake, Khyargas Lake and any mountain trailhead, and agree price and route before leaving.
- Public transport does not reach the lakeshores, so a driver, tour company or group is the normal pattern outside town.
