Is Terelj safe?
- Petty crime and pickpocketing occur in crowded places in Ulaanbaatar.
- Poor and unpredictable rural roads and extreme winter weather apply on a Terelj trip.
- Winter nights can fall to minus 30 C or lower, so frostbite is a minutes-level risk without expedition clothing.
- Do not hike alone far from camps, as visitors get lost and remote areas hold bears and wolves.
- Emergency numbers: police 102, ambulance 103, fire 101. Nearest hospital care is in Ulaanbaatar.
Terelj travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Eight hour tours bundling the statue, Turtle Rock, Aryabal, a family visit and riding deliver most stops at a sprint.
- Roadside eagle and camel photo stops charge per photo, so agree the price first.
- Book riding through your camp rather than the cheapest roadside offer, as horse welfare and safety standards vary.
Getting around Terelj: public transport and more
- Ulaanbaatar is the access base: Terelj is roughly 55 to 70 km away, reached by organised tour or private driver.
- There is effectively no public transport into the camp zone, and no taxis or ride hailing at the camps.
- The park road is paved to Terelj village, but camp tracks are dirt and riverside lodges may need high-clearance vehicles.
- Arrange your return transfer when you book, and download offline maps in Ulaanbaatar as signal is patchy.
