Is Lake Khovsgol safe?
- Lake water is under 10 C even in late July; swimming is a brief supervised dip, and cold shock is the main water risk.
- Boat only in calm mornings, in a life jacket, with a shore contact; there is no park rescue service to rely on.
- Do not go on lake ice outside locally advised routes and dates, and insure for medical evacuation from Khatgal and Khankh.
- Carry tugrik cash in depth and confirm fuel before long shore drives; fuel shortages were reported nationally in 2026.
- Share your route and return time with your guesthouse each day, and carry backup communications, because phone cover and emergency services may not exist in rural areas.
