Is Tsetserleg safe?
- Carry tugrik cash in depth; drivers, camps, park fees, markets and canteens in Arkhangai run on cash, not cards.
- Fuel shortages were reported across Mongolia in 2026; confirm fuel before any long circuit.
- Do not self-drive the western dirt tracks; hire a local driver, as signposting is minimal and phone coverage is patchy to absent.
- Keep well back from unfenced Chuluut canyon edges, treat White Lake water as cold in every month, and insure for medical evacuation.
Tsetserleg travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Treating the White Lake as a Tsetserleg day trip and spending most of a day in a vehicle for a short time at the shore.
- Assuming a ger camp price includes transfers, park fees, meals and activities when some are usually extra.
- Agreeing a driver price without confirming whether fuel, the driver's food and lodging and park entry are included.
- Arriving at Tsenkher or the White Lake outside the roughly June to September camp season expecting camps open and pools filled.
Getting around Tsetserleg: public transport and more
- Ulaanbaatar to Tsetserleg is about 470 to 480 km and roughly 8 hours by intercity bus; plan on the road, as there are no regular flights to rely on.
- Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur and Khorgo Volcano are about 180 km northwest of Tsetserleg near Tariat; overnight at the lake, never day-trip them.
- Tsenkher Hot Spring is roughly 30 to 36 km south of town by road and Taikhar Rock is 22 km northeast, both needing a hired car and driver.
- In town, walk the centre and use local taxis between the monastery end and the market end of Tsetserleg.
