Things to do in Simien Mountains
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Simien Mountains
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Post rains window. Green plateau, flowers, full waterfalls and clearing skies, with muddy trails in early October.
Dry, clear and cold main season. Nights below freezing at Geech and Chenek, and Timkat in Gondar in January.
Dry but hazier and warmer, with fewer visitors, possible short rains, and Fasika in April or May in most years.
Main rains. Mud, swollen crossings, cloud on the escarpment and a park road that can fail. Avoid for a first trek and for Ras Dashen.

Think twice about
- Overland routes north and west from Gondar and Debark while the conflict in Amhara continues
The Gondar to Debark road and onward routes toward Shire and Aksum cross conflict affected ground with checkpoints and closures. Do not drive them on a tourist plan while the conflict continues.
- The park road and the Debark highway after dark
Unpaved, steep and unlit park roads, livestock and trucks on the highway, and no margin in a security incident. Make every transfer in daylight.

Is Simien Mountains safe?
- Amhara is an active conflict region, with fighting, checkpoints and closures reported in 2026. Gondar and Debark access is not currently realistic for leisure travel while the conflict continues.
- Altitude starts at a 3,250 m first camp. Sleep a night in Gondar and at Debark or a lodge first, walk slowly, and descend at once for worsening symptoms.
- Escarpment edges are unguarded with drops over 1,000 m. Keep back in gusts and keep children on the plateau side and in reach.
Simien Mountains travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Any product implying Ras Dashen is a day trip from Gondar is selling a viewpoint drive under a summit name. Read the camp names.
- Budgeting from old blogs quoting park fees in tens of birr will understate the trip by a large factor. Budget from a current operator quote.
- Chasing a guaranteed Ethiopian wolf sighting. The Simien population is small and a sighting is luck, not a product.
Getting around Simien Mountains: public transport and more
- Fly Addis Ababa to Gondar in normal times, then drive two to three hours to Debark and on by 4x4 park road toward Buyit Ras and Sankaber.
- There is no transport, fuel, shop or cash machine above Debark. Everything moves by roadhead vehicle, then by mule.
- Carry small birr notes from Gondar for crew tips and village coffee. Do not rely on a card working in Debark.
