Things to do in Lalibela
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Lalibela
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months overall, rains ended, skies clear, paths firm and festival season builds.
Connoisseur picks, same dry weather with far fewer visitors than December and January.
Workable shoulder months with thinner crowds, short rains and building heat in the lowlands.
Main kiremt rains peak in July and August, paths slick, views closed in and treks often paused.
What's on
- Genna (Ethiopian Christmas) 7 January
All night vigil of chanting and prayer around Bete Maryam and Bete Medhane Alem, book months ahead.
- Timkat (Epiphany) 19-20 January
Tabots processed to water and blessed between the rock churches, with singing, bells and dancing.
- Fasika (Easter) April/May, varies
Deeply felt and less international than Timkat, good for return visitors.
- Meskel 27 September
Celebrated locally and bigger in Addis, a bonus if your trip coincides and still possibly wet.
- Enkutatash (Ethiopian New Year) 11 September
Celebrated locally, bigger in Addis, and still in the rainy season.
Best things to do in Lalibela
Bete Giyorgis
A perfect Greek cross church cut 15 metres down into one rock block, best seen from the rim and inside with a guide.
Northwestern Cluster of Rock-Hewn Churches
Six linked churches including Bete Medhane Alem and painted Bete Maryam, joined by trenches and dark tunnels.
Southeastern Cluster of Rock-Hewn Churches
The quieter architectural cluster with Bete Amanuel, Bete Gabriel-Rafael and cliff-cut Bete Abba Libanos.
Dawn mass at Bete Medhane Alem
Stand quietly at dawn worship as deacons chant and pilgrims pray in incense and half light.
Lalibela Church Museum
A short coda after the churches, with processional crosses, crowns, manuscripts and priests garments explained.
Saturday Market
The weekly living market for grain, honey, livestock, woven cotton, crosses and pottery from Lasta villages.
Coffee ceremony in a local home
Beans roasted over charcoal and served in three jebena rounds with popcorn, ideally in a local family home.
Cooking class in Lalibela
Make injera, shiro and tibs yourself, then eat what you cooked with coffee afterwards.
Where to stay in Lalibela
The hill / Geterge side above town
best overall base, stays of two nights or more
Quiet slope west of the churches with big Lasta valley views, sunset terraces and cleaner air.
Old town centre
short stays and festival stays
Walk everywhere and reach dawn mass easily, but expect noise, dust and touting near the main street.
Sekota Road / airport-road edge
quiet stays with a driver
Spacious grounds and easy airport runs, but you need a vehicle or tuk-tuk for every meal and church visit.
Hudad Plateau
one night interlude, not a church base
A magical plateau night two to three hours hike from town, so book it between church days, not instead of town.
Think twice about
- Main-road / bus-and-market strip in the centre
Noise, dust, diesel and hassle with none of the walking benefit of a centre side lane.
- Far out on the airport road without own transport
Unreviewed properties out here can strand you through distance and power cuts, not neighbourhood danger.

What to book ahead
- Cooking class in Lalibela: a few days ahead
- Abune Yosef Conservation Area: a few days ahead
- Lasta Mountains Trek: a few days ahead
- Festivals need flights, the best lodges and a named guide booked months ahead, then reconfirmed a week before.
- Book a named, licensed, Lalibela based guide ahead in peak season, the guide makes the church visit.
- Treks need at least a day of notice for porters, mules and village huts, and a written itinerary.
- Leave a buffer night in Addis before an international flight, never chain Lalibela to international same day.
Is Lalibela safe?
- Travel to Amhara, including Lalibela, is advised against in full at present; check current advice on booking and on departure day.
- Ethiopian Airlines suspended Lalibela flights on 24 September 2026 per a US Embassy alert, with no resumption timeline given.
- Acclimatise at 2500 metres before trekking higher, carry water and layers, and never summit on arrival day.
- Carry cash in birr, a power bank and a headtorch, as cards, ATMs, connectivity and power are unreliable.
Lalibela travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The one day all churches rush leaves you seeing Lalibela and understanding little.
- Decline unofficial guides at the church gate and agree every price in birr before the service.
- Keep your church pass stub, it covers the museum too, and no second cluster fee is due at tunnels.
- Eat raw kitfo only at a place your guide vouches for, and avoid salads washed in tap water.
Getting around Lalibela: public transport and more
- Walk the centre, the clusters, market and most restaurants sit within a steep 15 to 20 minute walk.
- Use tuk-tuks for hill hotels and Ben Abeba, agree the fare before getting in and carry small birr notes.
- Fly Addis Ababa to Lalibela in normal times and pre-arrange the 30 to 45 minute airport transfer.
- Book a private vehicle and driver through your lodge for Yemrehanna Kristos and Na'akuto La'ab.
