Things to do in Danakil Depression
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Danakil Depression
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
The window. Daytime heat in the mid 30s to low 40s, the most frequent departures and the most active salt caravans.
Heat builds through the 40s toward 45 degrees and beyond. Fit, heat confident travellers only, with shrinking margins.
Refuse this season. Heat regularly passes 45 degrees and can pass 50, and many operators suspend Danakil departures.
The shoulder reopens as heat falls, but October needs the tightest security check of any month in northern Ethiopia.
What's on
- Timkat 19 January
Ethiopian Epiphany in Mekele, with processions in the heart of the Danakil window, in a peaceful year with access open only.
- Meskel 27 September
Finding of the True Cross, marked with bonfires in the Tigray highlands just before October departures become thinkable.
Best things to do in Danakil Depression
Erta Ale
A shield volcano with a persistent lava lake, visited at night from Dodom, but lava visibility must be verified close to travel.
Dallol
A below sea level hydrothermal field of acid springs and salt terraces in yellow, green and rust, walked at dawn with a guide.
Lake Karum
The Ethiopian salt lake also called Asale, a white flat at 116 metres below sea level that turns gold at sunset by Hamed Ela.
Gaet'ale Pond
The saltiest water body measured on earth at 43 percent, a hot yellow pond near Dallol to view from a distance, never to enter.
Hamed Ela
A small Afar village on the salt flats that is the overnight base for Dallol, where the salt economy is lived, not staged.
Hayli Gubbi
The Erta Ale range volcano that erupted in November 2025 after about 12,000 quiet years, to view from a distance only.
Where to stay in Danakil Depression
Mekele
staging nights before and after the expedition
The Tigray capital holds the tiered hotel choice, the tour offices and the restaurants, with highland air before the descent.
Hamed Ela
the Dallol night on circuit
The Afar village camp by the salt flats, open air cots and no facilities, placed for a dawn start at Dallol.
Erta Ale
the volcano night on circuit
A rim bivouac or the Dodom base camp, mattresses on lava with the caldera in front of you and nothing else provided.
Think twice about
- Eritrea border strip
A closed, militarised border inside an escorted zone. Never leave the convoy or the escort route near it.
- Afar and Tigray while access is closed
Conflict in northern Ethiopia has closed Afar and Tigray to responsible travel in October 2026, with airports seized or suspended and the depression reachable only under armed escort.

Is Danakil Depression safe?
- Dallol averages 34.6 degrees across the year with highs near 49 degrees. Heat illness is the main everyday risk, so drink 3 to 5 litres a day.
- In January 2012 five tourists were killed at Erta Ale and two were taken hostage. Armed escort has been mandatory on every tour since.
- There is no hospital or phone signal across most of the depression. The nearest serious care is Mekele or Semera, hours away.
- At Gaet'ale Pond, stay back from the water. Gas bubbling through it has killed birds at its shore and the brine is 43 percent salt.
Danakil Depression travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- A cheap quote that cannot name its vehicles, escort arrangements and daily water allowance is not a bargain.
- Brochure promises of a glowing Erta Ale lava lake may be out of date since the November 2025 Hayli Gubbi eruption covered it in ash.
- A discounted June to September departure in heat above 45 degrees should be refused at any price.
Getting around Danakil Depression: public transport and more
- There is no independent travel in the depression. Every visit is a permitted 4x4 convoy with a guide, a cook and armed escorts.
- The classic gateway is a flight from Addis Ababa to Mekele, then a descent into Afar. The alternative gateway is Semera, the Afar capital.
- Expect long rough driving days on lava and salt tracks between Erta Ale, Lake Afrera and Hamed Ela.
