Things to do in Axum
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Axum
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
The classic dry window to aim for in a future window: clear skies, green highlands after the rains, and the main festivals.
Hotter and dustier belg season, still workable in a future window, with dawn starts for Gheralta climbs.
Main kiremt rains, heaviest in July and August. Roads deteriorate and exposed climbs become dangerous.
Ashenda, the Tigrayan women's and girls' festival, fills the second half of August after the Filseta fast.

Saves hours of driving from Axum and puts evenings under the massifs.
Think twice about
- Tigray Region while fighting continues
Renewed armed conflict across Tigray in October 2026, with airports seized and flights suspended. Do not go until the fighting ends and flights are running again.
- Eritrea border area and Axum Airport area
Border roads are closed, conditions change without warning, and the airport was seized in September 2026. Avoid military sites entirely.
- Outside central Axum at night in an early future window
Fragile power, transport and communications. Stay central, stay with your guide advice, and do not walk alone at night.

|---|---|
| Classic | ETB 11,000 a person |
| Splurge | ETB 22,000 a person |
A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Book nothing for Tigray while fighting continues and flights are suspended. Verify the situation on the ground on the day you plan and the day you pay.
- In a future window, book festival trips for Hidar Tsion and Timkat through an operator early. Pilgrims fill small hotel stock first.
- Reconfirm festival dates for the specific year. Ethiopian calendar leap years can shift Timkat by a day.
Is Axum safe?
- October 2026: renewed conflict, strikes reported, airports seized, communications shutdowns and no standard insurance cover for a leisure trip. Do not go.
- On Gheralta climbs there are no ropes or fences on exposed ledges. Scouts help but cannot make a fall impossible.
- Carry all prescription medicine in full supply, bottled water discipline, and medical evacuation insurance in any future window.
Axum travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Anyone selling access inside the Chapel of the Tablet or a sight of the Ark is selling a fiction. Exterior only, for everyone.
- A guide who presents the Sheba palace and bath legends as dated history without the archaeology is reciting, not guiding.
- Old hotel, fee and flight listings from before the war are not current. Do not prepay on their strength.
Getting around Axum: public transport and more
- Once flights resume, fly Addis Ababa to Axum Airport. As of October 2026 there is no service.
- Walk the central sights with a licensed guide. Use a private car, driver and scouts for Yeha, Debre Damo and Gheralta.
- Never plan entry through Eritrea. Border roads are closed.
