Things to do in Sapa
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Sapa
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Golden season. Ripe gold rice, dry trails and clear skies, with the marathon in mid September.
Spring, second best. Mild and drier, blossom early, then flooded terraces mirror the sky in April and May.
Green and wet. Vivid terraces and full waterfalls, but heavy rain, mud, leeches and days of fog.
Late autumn, underrated. Drier, crisp and quieter after harvest, with often excellent Fansipan clarity.
Winter. Cold, fog and frost, bare terraces and Tet disruption, with ethnic new year festivals as the upside.

Is Sapa safe?
- Real risks are mountain roads in fog, slippery clay trails, and cold and altitude on Fansipan.
- Wear sturdy grippy footwear and carry insurance covering trekking and motorbike pillion travel.
- Thang co is traditionally horse meat, sometimes with offal. Order it knowingly or skip it.
Sapa travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Agree full prices before photo shoots, costume rental, market grilling and any motorbike taxi ride.
- Much night market textile stock is factory made. Buy textiles and batik in villages instead.
- Never pre book non refundable Fansipan or glass bridge tickets before seeing the morning sky.
Getting around Sapa: public transport and more
- Town is walkable. Use hotel cars, agreed price taxis and the Muong Hoa funicular for Fansipan.
- Hanoi is 320 km by limousine van, sleeper bus or overnight train to Lao Cai plus a transfer.
- Easy rider pillion is the sane default. Self riding needs a licence with motorbike entitlement.
