Best time to visit Rach Gia
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: dry, sunny, 24 to 30C, calmest Gulf seas and clearest island water. Ferries most reliable.
Good shoulder: November is greener post-rain with Ok Om Bok; April is hot but largely dry and excellent for islands.
Worst months: daily downpours, flooded old-centre streets, rough crossings, ferry cancellations and silty island water.
What's on
- Nguyen Trung Truc Festival 26th to 28th day of the 8th lunar month, usually September or October

Hon Son's whale festival: palanquin processions, gratitude for safe seas, folk games and performance.

Is Rach Gia safe?
- Cross motorbike traffic slowly and predictably, and keep valuables zipped around the market and port.
- Rainy-season downpours flood old-centre streets fast: in May to October prefer higher ground in Phu Cuong and allow extra ferry time.
- The ferry-port perimeter is dark after the last boat and far Phu Cuong edges feel isolated: Grab back from empty sections.
Rach Gia travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The mainland shore is promenade and working harbour, silty and unswimmable: swim on the islands or at Mui Nai.
- Never book the last ferry of the day to or from an island; a cancellation leaves no same-day fallback.
- The Rach Gia to Phu Quoc run is long and rough: take a morning sailing, sit on the open rear deck, medicate if prone.
- Always confirm the per-kilo price and weighed weight of live seafood before cooking.
- Phu Quoc is not a day trip from Rach Gia: five hours of ferry for a few hours ashore. Overnight there or choose Hon Son.
Getting around Rach Gia: public transport and more
- No railway or useful city bus: use Grab, taxis, hotel cars, and walk the old centre early and in the evening.
- Old centre to Phu Cuong seafront is 10 to 15 minutes; the airport is 20 to 30 minutes.
- Ferries: Phu Quoc about 2.5 hours, Hon Son 1.5 hours, Nam Du 2 to 2.5 hours. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early with a passport.
- Motorbike rental via hotels runs about 100,000 to 150,000 VND a day; licence and helmet required.
