Things to do in Phong Nha
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Phong Nha
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best window: dry, cool to mild, rivers low and clear, all caves operating and crowds thinner.
Hot and humid and fully open, with the best swimming and domestic crowds peaking in June and July.
Shoulder gamble with low crowds and prices if dry. Keep plans flexible and do not prepay a sole expedition.
Avoid for a cave trip: heavy rain and flooding close river caves, expeditions and roads.
What's on
- Tet (Lunar New Year) late January / February
Transport sells out, prices rise and some operators close or run holiday rosters. Book everything early.
- Cave season opening February
First Son Doong and full expedition departures after flood closure, with the park at its greenest.
- Reunification Day and Labour Day holiday block 30 April to 1 May
Domestic crowd surge at Paradise and Dark Cave and expeditions book out sooner.

- Isolated properties on Highway 15 / Ho Chi Minh Highway

Is Phong Nha safe?
- Follow cave guide instructions absolutely, wear helmet and life jacket, and respect flood closures without argument.
- Never enter a closed or unguided cave and do not swim at cave mouths outside guided areas.
- Stay on trail with a guide in the jungle. Unexploded ordnance remains an off path hazard and leeches are common in wet months.
- A motorbike accident is the highest real risk. If you have never ridden, take cars and operator transfers instead.
- Heat and humidity are the daily hazard. Carry water and electrolytes, use sun protection, and treat cave scrapes promptly.
- The nearest hospital of scale is in Dong Hoi, 45 km away. Travel insurance covering adventure activities is essential.
Phong Nha travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Doing Phong Nha as a day trip from Dong Hoi or Hue, which leaves one crowded boardwalk cave after hours of transfers.
- Chartering a Phong Nha Cave boat alone instead of waiting at the dock to share the per boat fee.
- Booking Dark Cave expecting a pristine show cave. It is a mud and zipline group activity.
- Mooc Spring add on creep: kayak, life jacket, locker and extras stack, so confirm the all in price first.
- Any desk other than Oxalis selling a cheap Son Doong tour is selling a different cave under that name.
- Over scheduling caves: two cave experiences a day is the ceiling, with rest days after overnight expeditions.
- Karaoke and main road noise is the town annoyance. Light sleepers should pick set back, Victory Road or farmstay properties and pack earplugs.
Getting around Phong Nha: public transport and more
- All routes funnel through Dong Hoi: fly or take the train there, then 45 km by prebooked transfer, metered taxi at 400000 to 500000 VND, or Bus B4.
- Direct sleeper buses reach Phong Nha town but many arrive 3.30am to 5am, so confirm early check in with your stay before booking.
- Motorbike is the default for Paradise Cave, Dark Cave and Bong Lai, but only with real riding confidence, a proper helmet and valid licence and insurance.
- Bicycle is enough for Bong Lai and Chay Lap and many farmstays lend bikes free. It is not enough for Paradise Cave in hot months.
- Private car or easy rider suits families and groups of 3 to 4 doing Paradise plus Dark Cave in one day.
- Walking works only inside Phong Nha town. Do not rely on city style Grab for park attractions and arrange rides in advance.
- Oxalis and Jungle Boss include town pickups for expeditions. Confirm the pickup point the night before and be ready early.
