Think twice about
- All of Myanmar today, including Ngapali and Thandwe, for leisure travel
Fighting reached Rakhine State and Thandwe in 2024 and resorts closed. Save this trip for when that changes.
- The road route into Ngapali from central Myanmar
Access was always fly in via Thandwe Airport from Yangon. The long road over the Rakhine hills was never a realistic tourist route.
- Military positions, checkpoints and the airport perimeter as photo stops
Thandwe Airport and nearby battalion areas were fought over in 2024. Never photograph military sites or personnel.

- Fighting reached Thandwe and Ngapali in 2024, the airport changed hands, and resorts closed and staff fled. Verify everything locally in any future window.

- Check that standard travel insurance is valid for the destination at the time of travel.
Ngapali Beach travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Listings still show closed resorts as open. The former Hilton closed in April 2020 and is listed as permanently closed.
- Beach boat touts have a mixed record. Agree the full route, inclusions and total price in writing before any deposit.
- Official and market kyat rates have differed sharply. Confirm which rate a price uses before comparing quotes.
Getting around Ngapali Beach: public transport and more
- Fly Yangon to Thandwe Airport in about 45 to 50 minutes, then drive 10 to 20 minutes to the beach, in a future window only.
- Walk the beach and the main road between resorts and restaurants. Use resort shuttles or local taxis for Thandwe town.
- There is no realistic road arrival for visitors. Plan around flights, and around their monsoon reduction.
