Things to do in Inle Lake
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Inle Lake
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Cool dry season and best overall: clear skies, misty dawns, cold early mornings on the boat.
Late October is a top window as rains end and the Phaung Daw Oo festival runs.
Hot season: heat, haze and smoke flatten views, hard midday sun, lake and channels shrink.
Monsoon into early October: rain, muddy trek paths, road disruption and some businesses reduced or closed.
What's on
- Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival 29 September - 16 October

End of Buddhist Lent, celebrated with lights and candles and overlapping the pagoda festival climax.
- Tazaungdaing November full moon
Lights and offerings nationwide at the full moon.

Best things to do in Inle Lake
Inle Lake
A private longboat day at sunrise is the whole point of Inle, linking stilt villages, gardens and pagodas.
Shwe Indein Pagoda
Hundreds of moss covered and gilded stupas on a hillside, reached by a river channel and covered walkway.
Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda
The lake's most revered pagoda, holding five Buddha images thickly layered with gold leaf over centuries.
Floating Gardens
Long beds of lake weed and silt growing tomatoes and greens, tended by farmers standing in canoes.
Ywama Village
The lake's main hub stilt village, best seen on a slow pass through its waterways rather than a staged stop.
Maing Thauk Village
Eastern shore stilt village with a long wooden bridge, paired with the floating gardens.
Bamboo Delight Cooking School
Market tour and Shan cooking in a home garden kitchen, with proceeds funding a local summer school and library.
Zu Zu's Cooking Class
A smaller, newer cooking class cooking Shan and Intha dishes after a morning market walk.
Where to stay in Inle Lake
Nyaung Shwe town
first trip, best value and best food
Sleep on land, walk to dinner and boats, choose from many restaurants and pay a fraction of lakeside prices.
On the lake: Maing Thauk, Khaung Daing and the eastern shore
splurge, quiet and a second visit
Lake view terraces, pools and dawn over the water, but you are captive to the resort for dinner without a boat or long drive.
Think twice about
- Phaung Daw Pyan Road jetty and canal strip
Noisy, diesel smelling and congested with touting boatmen from before dawn. Stay two or three streets back.
- Main Yone Gyi Road drag
Dusty in dry season, muddy in monsoon and trafficked all day. Convenient, not charming or quiet.
- Isolated on-lake properties with boat-only access
A bad base for evenings in town, tight budgets or anyone with mobility problems. After dark you are where you are.
- Khaung Daing village stays as a budget base
Quiet and lakeside but a long ride from Nyaung Shwe restaurants. Good for resort guests, poor as a budget base.

- Medical care is limited and ordinary insurance may not cover travel here. Specialist cover is needed.
Inle Lake travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Posed fishermen near main channels expect payment. Photograph working fishermen respectfully at a distance instead.
- A standard boat day can become five commission workshops. Pick Inpawkhon weaving, keep the pagoda, gardens and Indein, and say no other shops.
- Do not accept a floating market substitute on a non market day, and skip long neck photo stops and Sagar on a short first trip.
Getting around Inle Lake: public transport and more
- Fly to Heho, then 45 to 60 minutes by car to Nyaung Shwe. Boat is transport: agree price, stops and finish time before boarding.
- Bicycles cost about 1.50 to 3 dollars a day and suit flat town and the eastern shore. Use tuk-tuks or a car with driver after dark.
