Things to do in Hsipaw
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Hsipaw
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Cool and dry, the window: stable weather, clear hills and the Pankam trek in its best conditions.
Hot season with valley heat and burning haze, and Thingyan in mid April disrupting transport for days.
Monsoon: heavy rain, lush hills, slippery and leechy trails, a fuller waterfall, and corridor journeys exposed to disruption.
What's on
- Thingyan Mid April
Myanmar New Year water festival. Transport closes and disrupts for days and everyone gets soaked.
- Thadingyut October, full moon of Thadingyut
Festival of lights marking the end of Buddhist Lent, at the turn from monsoon to the cool season.
- Tazaungdaing November, full moon of Tazaungmone
Festival of lights early in the cool dry window, with dates that move by lunar calendar each year.
Best things to do in Hsipaw
Hsipaw Palace
The 1924 saopha palace of Sao Kya Seng and Inge Sargent, visited as a guest in a family home and history.
Little Bagan
A quiet cluster of old brick stupas and ruins north of town, walked or cycled to and usually had to yourself.
Hsipaw Morning Market
The dawn working market where Shan and Palaung villagers sell produce, tea and textiles, best in the first hour.
Thein Daung Pagoda
The pagoda on Sunset Hill south of town, for the late afternoon view over the valley and the Dokhtawady River.
Mahamyatmuni Paya
The town pagoda in central Hsipaw, a short respectful visit that shows where ordinary Hsipaw worships.
Where to stay in Hsipaw
Central Hsipaw
guesthouses, market and trekking desks
The walkable centre with Mr Charles, Lily The Home and Yee Shin, the market, and most of the places to eat.
Dokhtawady River, Hsipaw
quiet and comfort
The riverside setting of the Riverside @ Hsipaw Resort, outside the centre and reached by local transport.
Think twice about
- All of Myanmar today, including Hsipaw and Shan State North, for leisure travel
Active conflict in northern Shan State. Save this trip for when that changes.
- Rural hills around Hsipaw without a local guide
Restricted areas, armed actors and, in the war years, mines and unexploded ordnance. Trek only on routes a Hsipaw guide says are in ordinary use.
- The Mandalay to Lashio road and rail corridor on assumption
The corridor was fought over in 2024 and 2025 and the viaduct was damaged in August 2025. Use it only when checked in ordinary civilian use that week.
Best restaurants in Hsipaw
Mrs Popcorn's Garden
The garden restaurant travellers named first for a relaxed dinner, a splurge only by Hsipaw standards.
Mr Shake
The beloved fruit shake stall and snack shop, worth the wait at busy times in traveller accounts.
Hsipaw Market noodle and tea stalls
A dawn bowl of Shan noodles and tea at a market stall, the cheapest and fastest way to learn the town.
Mr Wok
A small central Asian restaurant for cheap, filling wok dishes, noodles and rice plates at dinner.
Outdoor things to do in Hsipaw
Pankam Village
The classic overnight Palaung trek, five hours up through tea fields to a family homestay in the hills.
Dokhtawady River
A gentle longtail boat ride downstream past Shan villages and orchards, with a walk back through the fields.
Nam Tok Waterfall
The town waterfall day walk, a cycle ride out then about 45 minutes on foot to falls and a swimming pool.
Goteik Viaduct
The great 1900 rail trestle over the gorge, listed subject to the rail position, as no regular service is confirmed.

The newer sister property of Mr Charles, cleaner and calmer, with the same trekking and information network.
Mr Charles Guesthouse
The historic budget hub whose trekking desk organised Hsipaw for independent travellers before 2021.

Is Hsipaw expensive? What a day costs
| Budget | MMK 60,000 a person |
|---|---|
| Classic | MMK 120,000 a person |
| Splurge | MMK 220,000 a person |
A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Pankam Village: a few days ahead
- Riverside @ Hsipaw Resort: a few days ahead
- Book good rooms ahead in the November to February window, because Hsipaw's good rooms were always few.
- Do not book any Hsipaw trip while leisure travel remains impossible, and confirm access reality with a reputable local operator that month.
Is Hsipaw safe?
- Do not travel today: Hsipaw has been fought over in the current civil war, and armed conflict, landmines and unexploded ordnance are live risks in northern Shan State.
- Hsipaw was besieged, bombed, taken by the TNLA in 2024 and retaken by the junta in October 2025, with large displacement.
- Medical facilities in Hsipaw are basic and serious care is in Mandalay, hours away on a mountain road.
- Never walk off established paths in the countryside because of mines and unexploded ordnance.
Hsipaw travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Guidebook kyat prices are history. Reprice the whole trip at the parallel rate of the week you travel.
- Listings outlive guesthouses and restaurants in Hsipaw. Confirm every pick is open and operating locally at the time.
- Large banknotes cannot be changed in the market or the villages. Carry small kyat notes.
Getting around Hsipaw: public transport and more
- Walk and rent a bicycle in town, as travellers always did.
- Check the Mandalay to Lashio road and the Goteik train that week with your guesthouse and Shan news, never on assumption.
- Do every excursion as a daylight, guide led trip and be back in town before dark.
