And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kalaw
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Cool dry season, the window: clear skies and warm days, cold nights, and January the driest month.
Hot season: rising heat and haze, April the warmest month, with Thingyan shutting transport in mid April.
Rainy season: mud, leeches and cloud on the trek, with August and September the wettest months, but the greenest hills.

Think twice about
- All of Myanmar today, including Kalaw, for leisure travel
Armed conflict and civil war across Myanmar, with fighting in southern Shan State. Save this trip for a calmer time.
- Isolated properties on the roads out of Kalaw town
Unlit roads and distance from food, agencies and help, for no benefit over a town base.
- Pindaya township roads on any fresh report of fighting
Pindaya saw lethal violence in October 2026. Drop the day trip first and confirm the road that week with a local driver.

- Book the trek in person in Kalaw after meeting the agency, and ask which villages and night stops are planned.
- Do not travel today. Re-check conditions when planning, when booking, and on the day of travel, and do not go if the situation says not to.
Is Kalaw safe?
- Do not travel today: armed conflict and civil war make Myanmar unsafe. Save this trip for when that changes.
- Never photograph soldiers, checkpoints, police or military sites, and do not photograph people in trek villages without asking.
- Carry personal medication in full. Medical care is limited and evacuation means Yangon or Thailand.
- Pack a real warm layer. Kalaw nights in December and January can fall toward 5 to 10 degrees.
Kalaw travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Kalaw's small Shwe U Min cave is not the famous Pindaya Shwe U Min. Check which one a tour or map result means.
- Any luxury priced Kalaw package at multiples of local rates is a trap in a town with no luxury supply chain.
- Listings outlive restaurants and hotels in Kalaw. Confirm every pick is open on the day.
Getting around Kalaw: public transport and more
- Walk Kalaw town end to end. Heho airport is about an hour by road.
- On the trek you walk and your luggage goes by vehicle to Nyaungshwe.
- Confirm every intercity road movement with a local agency that week, because checkpoints and closures decide what is possible.
