Is Mandalay safe?
- Myanmar is in civil war: North Mandalay and Sagaing are no-go, and travel to Mandalay Region is high-risk.
- Do not photograph soldiers, police, checkpoints, protests or military vehicles.
- Earthquake risk is structural, the Sagaing Fault runs here and much building stock was damaged in March 2025.
- Heat is a medical risk from March to May, and hospitals are limited, so evacuation insurance is essential.
Mandalay travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Seeing only the reconstructed palace and skipping Shwenandaw, the original teak monastery outside its walls.
- Watching the Mahagandayon monks meal as a spectator event with intrusive cameras.
- Buying jade, gems or antiques as an investment in a professional market tied to conflict business.
- Scheduling pagodas between 11am and 3pm in the hot season, when Mandalay is a dawn and dusk city.
Getting around Mandalay: public transport and more
- Mandalay is a numbered grid, streets east to west and avenues north to south, easy to learn.
- Walk the central grid and moat, take taxis for hops, and hire a car with driver for the capitals.
- The airport is about 35 km south, about an hour in normal traffic, and its operations must be verified.
- Carry cash in kyat, card acceptance was always thin and banking disruption since 2021 deepened that.
