Best time to visit Whangārei
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Summer peak: warmest sea, patrolled beaches and every boat running, with peak prices and crowds.
The sweet spot: still warm, calmer towns, the Fritter Festival in March and harvest produce at the market.
Last warmish, quiet month, a good Poor Knights month on the edge of the winter schedule.
Wettest and quietest: mild days, no surf patrols and reduced boat schedules, but the best dive visibility.
Spring shoulder: warming water, lower prices and Sculpture Northland in the Quarry Gardens in November.

- Manaia and Bream Head summits have no barriers and fatal drops, so stay on the track.
- Use kauri dieback cleaning stations and stay on formed tracks in kauri parks.
- Leave nothing visible in cars at isolated walk and beach car parks. Emergency number is 111.
Whangārei travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Staying in town and never reaching a coast is the common disappointment pattern here.
- The inland CBD is not an evening plan; the Town Basin is the evening answer.
- The Mermaid Pools track at Matapouri is closed, so do not follow old blog directions there.
- Surf beaches have real rips, so swim between the flags where patrols run.
Getting around Whangārei: public transport and more
- You need a car: Tutukaka and Whangarei Heads are each about 30 minutes away and Waipu Cove about 40 to 45 minutes.
- Walk the Town Basin in town and use CityLink buses from Rose Street for suburbs and the airport run.
- Whangarei Airport has flights from Auckland, and driving from Auckland takes about two to two and a half hours.
- Heads and Tutukaka roads are narrow and winding, so plan one coast per day.
