- Winter ice affects State Highway 8 and the Mount Cook road, carry chains and check NZTA conditions before driving.
- Ultraviolet is extreme at 710 metres with lake and snow glare, sunscreen and a hat are walking equipment all year.
- Carry water on every walk, there is none on Mt John, the Peninsula or Cowans Hill tracks.
Lake Tekapo travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- One night is a gamble for stargazing, cloud, wind or a bright moon can each spoil it, so stay at least two nights.
- Tour groups swarm the Church of the Good Shepherd at midday, go before 9am or in the late afternoon instead.
- The famous lupins are an invasive weed that harms braided river bird habitat, enjoy them in place by the lake.
- Cafes close by about 4pm and most kitchens by 8.30pm, so plan the day food by lunchtime.
Getting around Lake Tekapo: public transport and more
- You need a car or a booked tour for anything beyond the village, which is fully walkable in about 15 minutes.
- Tekapo is about three hours by road from both Christchurch and Queenstown, on highways that ice over in winter.
- Tour operators shuttle to their own stargazing sites, another reason to sleep in the village itself.
