Is Fox Glacier safe?
- Never go past the South Side viewpoint or cross DOC barriers, glacier valley flood and river surge hazard is extreme.
- Check DOC track status and NZTA State Highway 6 status on the day, slips and flooding close both tracks and the only road.
- Do not swim at Gillespies Beach, do not force flooded creek crossings on the Copland Track, and carry repellent for sandflies.
Fox Glacier travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Old photos showing a walk to the glacier face describe access that ended when the road was destroyed in 2019.
- A one night stop with a fixed heli-hike date is the classic Fox Glacier disappointment, so build the buffer.
- Arriving in the village at 9pm expecting dinner, when kitchens close early and hours shrink in winter.
Getting around Fox Glacier: public transport and more
- Fox Glacier sits on State Highway 6, about 25 minutes south of Franz Josef and roughly 2 hours south of Hokitika.
- Wanaka and Queenstown are roughly 4 to 5 hours south via the Haast Pass, all subject to road status.
- Everything in the village is a short walk, but Lake Matheson, the South Side trailhead and Gillespies Beach need a car.
