Things to do in Christchurch
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Christchurch
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Summer, best overall and busiest. Long evenings, dolphins, whales, wine and walks at their best, with peak pricing at Christmas and New Year.
Autumn, the connoisseur's pick. Settled weather, golden Hagley Park, Waipara harvest in March and April, thinner crowds and lower prices.
Winter, cold and clear, built for hot pools and skiing at Mt Hutt. Worst for beach swimming and gardens, which are quietest in July.
Spring, gardens peak with blossom then roses and prices still kind, but weather is most changeable. November is the sweet spot.

Where to stay in Christchurch
Central City inside the Four Avenues
first trip, all-round base
Walk to Riverside Market, the Gardens, the Gallery, New Regent Street and most restaurants.
Merivale / Victoria Street
restaurants, longer stays and a local feel
Leafy suburb north of the centre with boutique shopping, top dining on Papanui Road and quieter nights.
Riccarton
value and practical base with a car
Cheaper rooms, free parking, Westfield Riccarton and a strong strip of Asian restaurants on Riccarton Road.
Sumner
beach-first stays
Seaside village with surf beach, cafe strip and coastal walks, but a poor base for city-first trips.
Airport area
one-night practicality only
Good hotels with shuttles for early flights and the Antarctic Centre, with nothing to walk to at night.
Think twice about
- Linwood and Phillipstown
East of Fitzgerald Avenue, these suburbs feel rough and run-down after dark with no visitor upside for a similar price elsewhere.
- New Brighton and Bromley as a city base
Far-east and scruffy in parts, a long bus ride from everything with few good hotels. Visit for the pools, stay elsewhere.
- Outer Riccarton and Sockburn motel strips
Inconvenient as a base if you have no car, despite cheaper motel rooms.
- Rolleston, Rangiora and Kaiapoi listings sold as Christchurch
These are 30-plus minutes out and a different town in practice, not a Christchurch base.

Is Christchurch safe?
- Christchurch is safe by global standards, with rare violent crime against visitors and a well-lit busy centre.
- Do not leave gear visible at trailhead car parks. Godley Head and Port Hills car parks do see break-ins.
- Visible homelessness around the Bus Interchange and Cathedral Square is present but well below large US city scale.
- Earthquakes, fast weather flips, exposed Port Hills tracks with no water and rips at surf beaches are the bigger risks.
Christchurch travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Treating Christchurch as an airport overnight and missing the day trips that justify extra nights.
- Buying tram and gondola combo passes by default without checking the maths for sights you already wanted.
- Riding the gondola on a cloudy or hazy day at full price with no view.
- Expecting Cathedral Square to be a polished old-town photo. It is a work in progress with a fenced cathedral.
- Taking quake tourism bus loops of residential red-zone streets, widely criticised by locals.
- Driving Akaroa plus Kaikoura, or Hanmer plus Kaikoura, in one day. That is 7 to 8 hours in the car.
Getting around Christchurch: public transport and more
- The centre is flat and walkable inside the Four Avenues, no transport needed.
- Metro buses cover Sumner, Lyttelton, the airport, Willowbank and New Brighton. The tram is sightseeing, not transport.
- For Port Hills trailheads, the Adventure Park, Akaroa, Waipara, Hanmer and golf you need a car, tour or rideshare.
- The airport is 20 minutes to the central city. New Zealand drives on the left and rural distances take longer than they look.
