Things to do in Ulm
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ulm
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: long light, terrace weather, the Alb at its greenest and sane hotel prices.
Schwörwoche and Nabada month: the city parties, rooms strain and prices spike.
Christmas market on Münsterplatz from late November, cold and dark early and made for it.
Worst months: Danube fog, short grey days, tower views most likely lost and seasonal sites reduced.
Shoulder season gambles: blossom and quiet museums if the weather turns, sleet if it does not.
Underrated: Alb autumn colour, tavern roast season and the last comfortable cycling weeks.
What's on

The huge Danube water parade and water fight that climaxes Schwörmontag, watched by tens of thousands.
- Lichterserenade Saturday before Schwörmontag
Thousands of lights float down the Danube, usually with fireworks, the calmer Schwörwoche highlight.
- Fischerstechen Two Sundays before Schwörmontag, every four years
Medieval water jousting on the Danube, most recently held in 2025.
- Internationales Donaufest Early July, every two years in even years
Ten days of music, markets and food from the Danube countries along both banks.

Where to stay in Ulm
Altstadt and Fischerviertel
first trip, couples, the postcard
The Minster, the Blau lanes and the dinner quarter are all at your feet from your door.
Münsterplatz and Neue Mitte
design, cathedral views, convenience
Modern rooms on the city's main square, with the Minster filling the window and the station ten minutes away.
Friedrichsau and the Danube east bank
space, quiet, families, food trips
Park, lake and the city's best kitchen, with a tram or a riverside walk back to the centre.
Bahnhofsviertel edge
budget, early trains, drivers
The national budget chains cluster here, a short walk from both the station and the Minster.
Think twice about
- Hauptbahnhof station perimeter
The grittiest few hundred metres in Ulm, with loitering and poorly lit underpasses at night. Use the station, do not sleep facing it.
- Outlying science and business parks
Safe but a poor holiday base: car dependent, dead at night and a bus ride from every pick.
- Far residential and industrial edges of Neu-Ulm
Central Neu-Ulm is a fine base, but its far edges mean a long walk from the river and the old town.

Is Ulm safe?
- Watch bags in Christmas market and festival crowds, and lock bikes; bike theft is the everyday risk.
- Walk lit main streets, not station underpass shortcuts, after dark.
- Respect the Danube: swim at the Donaubad and designated spots, not by the city wall.
- The Minster tower stair is steep, narrow stone; use handrails and turn back if you need to. Emergency number 112.
Ulm travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Einstein birthplace is only a marker at a street corner; do not build a detour around it.
- Do not go to the old Museum Ulm address for the Lion Man; it is at kunsthalle weishaupt during renovation.
- Skip the Minster climb in fog or at crowded noon; 768 steps need a clear day and an early start.
- Check current Blautopf renovation access before promising the classic viewpoint.
- Never pay LEGOLAND gate prices when dated online tickets are cheaper.
Getting around Ulm: public transport and more
- Walk the centre: Minster, old town, Fischerviertel, wall and station sit inside a fifteen minute circle.
- SWU trams and buses cover the Friedrichsau and the university; buy a day ticket if you ride twice.
- Ulm Hauptbahnhof links Stuttgart in about an hour, Munich in one to one and a half, Blaubeuren in about twenty minutes.
- Park once in a centre garage and do not attempt the Fischerviertel lanes by car.
