Where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Things to do in Hamburg, planned over three days
Best time to visit Hamburg
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Winter, dark, damp and atmospheric, highs 3 to 5C, museums and concert season, Christmas markets late November to Christmas, cheapest hotels in January.
Spring turn, March still winter, April brings the funfair and Altes Land blossom, May is a best month with long evenings and the port anniversary.
Summer outdoors, highs around 22 to 23C, light until late, Elbstrand, Alster sailing and water light concerts, with peak prices and showers.
Autumn, locals' favourite, September keeps summer's programme with saner crowds plus harvest and heather bloom, October days shorten fast.
What's on
- Hafengeburtstag a long weekend in early or mid May
Port anniversary, the world's largest port festival with tall ships, a tugboat ballet, concerts and fireworks.
- Hamburger DOM - Spring DOM late March-April
Northern Germany's largest funfair on Heiligengeistfeld, with Friday fireworks next to St. Pauli.
- Hamburger DOM - Summer DOM late July to late August
Summer edition of the DOM funfair on Heiligengeistfeld, loud, joyful and genuinely local.
- Hamburger DOM - Winter DOM November-early December
Winter edition of the DOM funfair on Heiligengeistfeld, running into the Christmas market season.
- Wasserlichtkonzerte May-September, after dark
Water light concerts at Planten un Blomen, fountains choreographed to music and light in summer.
- Schlagermove first weekend of July
Huge Schlager costume parade with music trucks through St. Pauli, gloriously unexportable German pop culture.
- Christopher Street Day / Hamburg Pride late July-early August
Pride week around Lange Reihe in St. Georg, ending in a big Saturday parade through the centre.
- Alstervergnügen late summer
Four days of stages, food stalls and fireworks around the Binnenalster, free to enter.
- Reeperbahn Festival four days in mid to late September
Europe's largest club festival, hundreds of emerging acts across St. Pauli venues, churches and the Bunker.
- Hamburg Cruise Days mid September, in the years it runs
Cruise ships lit up and parading on the Elbe at night, with the harbour lit blue. Not held every year.
Worth the trip for
Best things to do in Hamburg
Miniatur Wunderland
The world's largest model railway in a warehouse, with a working airport and tiny scenes full of hidden jokes.
Elbphilharmonie
Glass wave concert hall on a brick warehouse, with a free public Plaza giving the best harbour panorama in Hamburg.
Speicherstadt
The world's largest historic warehouse complex, red brick Gothic Revival warehouses on canals, best at blue hour.
Kontorhausviertel
Historic office district next to Speicherstadt, home to the ship prow shaped Chilehaus and brick expressionist facades.
Wasserschloss Speicherstadt
Little tea warehouse on a canal junction in Speicherstadt, the classic photo stop on the warehouse walk.
Speicherstadtmuseum
Small museum inside a warehouse that adds depth on how Speicherstadt stored and traded goods.
Deutsches Zollmuseum
German Customs Museum in Speicherstadt, an optional deep dive on smuggling, tariffs and port trade.
Ferry Line 62
Public HVV ferry from Landungsbrücken to Finkenwerder past shipyards and terminals, the cheap harbour tour.
Where to stay in Hamburg
Altstadt / Neustadt
first trip, all-round base
Walk to the Michel, Kunsthalle, Speicherstadt and harbour, with the best transport in the city and calm nights.
Speicherstadt / HafenCity
design, harbour views and a quiet night
Sleep in or beside the UNESCO warehouses and walk to the Elphi and Miniatur Wunderland, though nights can feel quiet.
Harvestehude / Rotherbaum / Eppendorf
couples, luxury and calm
Leafy villa streets on the Außenalster for dawn jogging and cafe afternoons, a short ride to the centre.
Sternschanze / Schanzenviertel
food, bars and a local-feeling stay
The best casual restaurant density in Hamburg and a hip local feel, but stay one street back from noisy Schulterblatt.
Ottensen / Altona
a longer or second trip
A liveable town inside the city with its own high street, Elbe views and Altona station for day trips west.
St. Pauli
nightlife only
Base here only if nightlife is the trip itself, and sleep off the Reeperbahn's main streets rather than on them.
Think twice about
- Hauptbahnhof immediate surrounds and St. Georg station side
Open drug dealing, drug use and street homelessness around Hansaplatz, Bremer Reihe and the station forecourt, plus pickpockets at night. Lange Reihe further east is a different, livelier street.
- On the Reeperbahn / Spielbudenplatz itself
Bars and strip clubs until dawn, drunk crowds under windows and touts for table dance clubs with inflated bills. Party in St. Pauli, sleep in the centre or Schanze.
- Wilhelmsburg, Billstedt, Harburg and the far south/east periphery
Industrial or residential districts across the Elbe with little visitor infrastructure and a long late night trip home. Hamburg's sights are north of the Norderelbe.
- HafenCity sold as a nightlife base
Safe and handsome, but new build streets can be dead after office hours. Do not pay a nightlife premium for it.
Best restaurants in Hamburg

Restaurant Haerlin

Zeik
Neighbourhood starred dining on Sierichstraße, regional and vegetable forward menus far from the tourist centre.
Fischereihafen Restaurant
Hamburg's definitive upscale fish restaurant since the 1980s, classic North Sea fish upstairs over the Elbe.
Brücke 10
Kiosk on Pier 10 serving the city's most praised Fischbrötchen, eaten on the pontoon with a beer watching the harbour.
Café Paris
French cafe bistro in a tiled former slaughterhouse hall near Rathaus, grand breakfasts by day, bistro by night.
Best bars in Hamburg

Bar inside the Elbphilharmonie building in the Westin, a calmer way to get a similar harbour view with a drink.
Strandperle
Long running Elbe beach bar at Övelgönne for a drink in the sand while ships pass on the river.
Le Lion • Bar de Paris
Ring the bell cocktail bar on Rathausstraße, birthplace of the Gin Basil Smash, the one bar to plan an evening around.

Gut Kaden Golf und Land Club

Außenalster
Outer Alster lake for sailing, rowing, SUP and pedal boats in season, plus a 7.4km loop path for an early run.
Alster Canals
Hire a canoe or kayak and drift the quiet canals past villa gardens, greener and more local than the harbour.
StadtRAD Hamburg
City hire bikes on a dead flat network, ideal for the Elbe ride west or the Alster loop and canals.
Elbstrand
Sandy Elbe beach west of the centre for paddling, picnics and watching container ships pass absurdly close.
Best hotels in Hamburg
TORTUE Hamburg
Boutique splurge in the Stadthöfe in Neustadt, a design hotel with its own bars and restaurants built in.
Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten

- Golf guest times at Falkenstein and Gut Kaden need advance arrangement and a handicap card.
- Hotels spike for Hafengeburtstag in May, Reeperbahn Festival and trade fairs, book rooms before flights then.
Is Hamburg safe?
- Pickpockets at Hauptbahnhof, in Reeperbahn crowds and on packed U-Bahn platforms, keep bags in front.
- Walk through the drug scene around Hauptbahnhof and Hansaplatz with purpose, do not base there.
- Do not leave drinks unattended and agree prices first in nightlife venues.
- Elbe beach currents are strong, obey flags and signage. Emergency number 112.
Hamburg travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Reeperbahn table dance touts, a cheap drink offer can become a huge card bill, ignore street promoters.
- Herbertstraße is not a sightseeing stop, walk the Kiez for music and bars instead.
- Paying over 25 EUR for a big ship harbour tour that duplicates Ferry 62 and cannot enter the canals.
- Hamburg Dungeon and generic attractions crowd out the real Speicherstadt on short trips, Chocoversum is better.
- Jungfernstieg and Mönckebergstraße shopping is an hour, not an afternoon, spend it in Schanze, Ottensen or on the Elbe.
Getting around Hamburg: public transport and more
- HVV runs U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses and harbour ferries on one ticket in the hvv switch app.
- Day tickets beat singles fast, and ferries 62 and 72 are included, which makes the cheap harbour tour.
- Airport S1 reaches Hauptbahnhof in about 25 minutes. The centre is walkable and StadtRAD bikes fill gaps.
- Do not rent a car, parking is expensive and harbour roads and the Elbe tunnels jam.
