Things to do in Baden-Baden
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Baden-Baden
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring: Easter and Pentecost festivals, Spring Meeting racing, rhododendrons and first roses. April changeable, May close to ideal.
Summer: Allee in full leaf, open air evenings, summit days and Grosse Woche in late August. Valley heat makes baths an evening activity.
Autumn: Black Forest colour, harvest and new wine, New Pop Festival and the Sales and Racing Festival. Many regulars' favourite.
Winter: Christmas Market from late November to 6 January, then quiet, grey, inexpensive months that suit a bath led trip.
Best months overall: late May to June and September to early October, with full gardens or colour and manageable crowds outside festival weeks.

- Ease into hot thermal water, hydrate and respect circuit times; watch steep wet cobbles.
- Battert rock and fast changing Black Forest weather are real risks; carry a mountain layer.
Baden-Baden travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Hotels near Oos station advertise Baden-Baden but sit 4 to 5 km from everything.
- The Faberge Museum at full price without a special interest is the most common disappointment among paid sights.
- Souvenir cuckoo clocks and Black Forest kitsch near the Kurhaus and Mummelsee are priced for coach tours.
- Casino gambling without a pre-set stake; the rooms are the attraction and the tables are priced accordingly.
- Driving the B500 on a summer Sunday afternoon is a queue with views; go early or on a weekday.
- Expecting nightlife: beyond the casino, Roomers rooftop and hotel bars, the town closes early.
Getting around Baden-Baden: public transport and more
- Walk the centre: Kurhaus to baths 10 minutes, baths to Festspielhaus 15, Allee end to end 45.
- Bus 201 is the station to centre workhorse; buses also cover Merkur, Geroldsau, Lichtenthal and Oos.
- The hotel guest card against the Kurtaxe traditionally includes local bus travel and discounts; confirm at check-in.
- Taxis are plentiful at the Kurhaus and station; driving in the centre is a poor idea.
