Where to stay in Trancoso
Quadrado and its lanes
first trip, dining, no car
Every restaurant is a barefoot walk away and the beach path is ten minutes downhill, at the village's highest prices.
Praia dos Nativos and Coqueiros beachfront
beach first trips and families
Breakfast on a deck over the sand and mornings in the water, with a short walk or taxi to the Quadrado for dinner.
Rio Verde, Itapororoca and Terravista
seclusion, resorts, golf and all inclusive families
Bigger, quieter properties on near empty beaches, wonderful with a car and frustrating without one.
Village off the Quadrado
value, long stays and the cheap tier
Simpler pousadas on ordinary village streets five to ten minutes from the square, the only genuinely cheaper base in Trancoso.
Think twice about
- Porto Seguro centre and the Taperapuã strip
A mass market resort strip an hour plus a ferry from Trancoso. Fine for a different holiday, a bad base for this one.

A lovely village, but every Trancoso beach day and dinner then depends on the ferry and a 35 km road.
- Isolated Taipe and Terravista villa rentals without a car

Is Trancoso safe?
- Do not leave valuables on the sand while swimming, use the pousada safe, and take a taxi back after dark from outlying areas.
- Swim where locals and cabanas swim, treat Taipe and Itaquena surf with respect, and never force the Rio da Barra crossing on a rising tide.
- Bring mosquito repellent, especially after rain, and know that serious medical care is in Porto Seguro, not the village.
Trancoso travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Quadrado front line markups, imported bottled water upsells and unflagged per person music cover charges on the bill.

- Walk the Quadrado and central beaches, and use taxis, buggies or a rental with clearance for Taipe, Rio Verde and Terravista.
