Things to do in Belém
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Belém
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
The rainy season, wettest February to April, with heavier daily rain, high rivers and the lowest hotel prices.
The drier local summer and best all round window, with better river beaches and easier island logistics.
Best months for weather without peak prices, with November counted after Cirio has passed.
Worst months for a beaches and islands trip, though a food and city trip still works.
What's on
- Círio de Nazaré Second Sunday of October (10 October in 2027), with events for about two weeks around it
Some two million people follow the image to the Basilica. The Trasladacao runs the evening before and the Recirio about two weeks later.

Musical street processions with giant puppets and boi rhythms through the old town, inside the Festas Juninas season.

Where to stay in Belém
Nazaré
first trip, all-round base
Traditional, tree lined and calm, with the Basilica, the theatre district and the best evening streets in the centre.
Batista Campos
value, comfort and local life
Leafy and residential around Praca Batista Campos, full of neighbourhood restaurants and a short walk from the theatre.
Umarizal
food trips and the Combu boats
Where Belem eats and drinks now, with the densest restaurant run and the Ver-o-Rio boats to Combu.
Cidade Velha / Campina waterfront
destination hotels only
The historic core holds the sights and two destination properties, but its streets empty at night.
Think twice about
- Campina commercial centre and the streets around Ver-o-Peso
Visit the market and Docas by day, but these streets empty after commerce closes and feel uncomfortable after dark. Sleep in Nazare, Batista Campos or Umarizal.
- Cidade Velha side streets away from the main sights
Great buildings on fragile streets. Do not wander away from the Feliz Lusitania sights after dark, and mind pickpockets by day.
- Guamá, Jurunas and Terra Firme
Peripheral residential neighbourhoods with serious documented violence problems. Visitors have no reason to base in or cross them.
- Airport and Ananindeua sprawl
Far from every sight with brutal traffic. No saving justifies it as a visitor base.

Belém travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Leaving without savoury acai with fried fish, the local original, after only trying sweetened export style bowls.
- Treating Estacao das Docas as the whole waterfront, it is polished and priced above local norms.
- Arriving at Sao Jose Liberto expecting a big craft fair, go for the gems museum and buy only what you love.
- Rushing Marajo as a day trip, six hours of boats for three hours of island is a bad trade.
Getting around Belém: public transport and more
- Use Uber and 99 rideshares door to door, cheap, plentiful and air conditioned, especially after dark.
- Combu boats leave from the Ver-o-Rio terminal in Umarizal, about 15 minutes, fares agreed at the quay.
- Cotijuba boats leave from Porto de Icoaraci, about 45 minutes, and the fast Marajo boat leaves around 06:30.
- The Mosqueiro public bus costs about R$6 to R$7 and the island is also joined by a road bridge.
