Fortaleza travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The 17 hour Jericoacoara day trip with a 3 to 4am start is almost universally regretted.
- Do not swim at Iracema or the central Beira Mar, swim at Praia do Futuro or out of town.
- Ask the full barraca price structure for pools, lounges and music cover when you sit down.
- Agree buggy route, duration and total price before departure, in writing where possible.
Getting around Fortaleza: public transport and more
- Use Uber and 99 ride hailing door to door at night, to Praia do Futuro, Centro and the airport.
- Walk the Beira Mar promenade and the Meireles and Varjota restaurant streets, not between neighbourhoods.
- Day trips pick up from seafront hotels, and Jericoacoara transfers leave at 3 to 4am.
- Never take a hire car onto sand, dune and lagoon sections need a buggy or 4x4 with a local driver.
