Think twice about
- Within 16 km of the Algerian border, and the 10 km band south of Kasserine Governorate
This border country is no-go or essential-travel-only, and the mountain oases approach it. Visit only on established operators' standard routes.
- The militarised zone south of El Borma and Dhehiba and within 20 km of the Libya border
Closed to travellers because of cross border terrorist activity and fighting in Libya.
- Within 75 km of the Libya border, including Remada and El Borma
Essential travel only in this band, excluding Zarzis, the C118 road and Medenine Governorate north of that road.
- The desert south of Remada
A military zone and no-go area. Deep desert routes must not freelance toward it.

- Do not travel within 16 km of the Algerian and Libyan borders or into the desert south of Remada, which is a military zone.
- The militarised zone south of El Borma and Dhehiba and the ground within 20 km of the Libya border are closed to travellers, and the band within 75 km of it is essential travel only.
- Heat is the daily risk: summer highs average 39 to 40 degrees and can reach 50, so sightsee at dawn and carry more water than you think you need.
- Petty crime is common in tourist locations, and violent crime is more common after dark, so do not walk or drive at night.
Tozeur and the Sahara travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Camp transfers are the hidden cost in Douz: without your own 4x4 and dune skill, a Camp Mars shuttle can add around 160 euros for one night.
- Old Anantara listings still circulate for what is now The Mora Sahara Tozeur, so book under the new name.
- Brochures blur the bases: mountain oases and Star Wars sites run from Tozeur, deep dunes and Ksar Ghilane from Douz.
Getting around Tozeur and the Sahara: public transport and more
- Tozeur to Douz is roughly 110 to 120 km, about two hours by louage or car via Kebili across the Chott el Jerid causeway.
- Tozeur-Nefta airport has a thin schedule, mainly from Tunis, and Douz has no airport, using Tozeur's about two hours away.
- Use an established operator or hotel desk for all desert excursions, and agree carriage and taxi prices before riding.
