Think twice about
- Bus and louage station districts
Functional streets with no sights, dining or evening life. Pass through for transport, do not sleep there.
- Kairouan as a week long base
No beach, resort or nightlife exists here. One day or one night is the right scale for most trips.

What to book ahead
- Hotel La Kasbah Kairouan: a few days ahead

- Dar Dhiafa Paul Klee Kairouan: a few days ahead
- Dar Abderrahman Zarrouk: a few days ahead
- Book medina guesthouses and the better hotel weeks ahead for Mawlid and Eid periods.
- Reserve Dar Abderrahman Zarrouk for a full course dinner at weekends and Dar Hassine Allani at any busy time.
- Book a private car for the Kairouan and El Jem day in high season on the coast.
Is Kairouan safe?
- Border and mountain zones far from Kairouan are off limits, and checkpoints and hotel security screening are normal in Tunisia.
- Dress modestly everywhere in the old town, with shoulders and knees covered and a headscarf for women at religious sites.
- Non Muslims enter the Great Mosque courtyard only and view the prayer hall from its doorways, with visits ending at noon on Fridays.
- Alcohol is essentially unavailable in the medina and local restaurants, and public drinking breaches local norms.
- Emergency numbers are 197 for police and 190 for ambulance.
Kairouan travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Unofficial guides who fall into step and lead you to a carpet shop expect payment and commission, so decline clearly and keep walking.
- In carpet houses the first price is an opening position, and shipping a large carpet can rival a small carpet's price.
- At the Governor's House, ask for the terrace directly or it may be skipped if you are not buying.
Getting around Kairouan: public transport and more
- Louages leave when full and link Kairouan with Sousse in about an hour, Monastir in about an hour and Tunis in about two hours.
- There is no railway station in Kairouan, so rail travellers continue from Sousse or Kalaa Seghira by louage or taxi.
- Confirm the last return louage time when you arrive, not when you are ready to leave.
- The El Jem link by public transport is awkward, with a once daily direct bus reported and louages usually changing in Sousse.
