Things to do in El Jem
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit El Jem
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring is the best window, mild to warm and dry with green olive country and a fraction of summer crowds.
Hot season peaks in August inland. Sightsee at opening, swim or rest at midday, and go out again in the evening.
The symphonic festival fills the amphitheatre on roughly nine or ten nights from mid July to mid August.
Autumn is the second good window, warm with a swimmable sea into October and the olive harvest under way.
Winter is cold, windy and quiet on the plain, with the cheapest hotels and empty tiers for those who dress for it.
Ramadan falls in February to March in 2027. Site hours shorten and in town cafes close by day.
What's on

- Olive harvest October to December

- Avoid walking or rural driving after dark, keep valuables out of sight at stations, and carry a copy of your passport.
- Emergency numbers are 190 for ambulance and 197 for police, and serious treatment means Monastir, Sousse or Tunis.
- At the amphitheatre there is almost no shade, footing is uneven and upper tiers have unfenced drops.

- Relying on card payment in El Jem town, where cash in small dinar notes is the working plan.
- Booking Hotel Club Ksar El Jem on price alone without reading its run down guest reports.
- Assuming an in town dinner exists after a festival concert. Eat before, or back at your coastal hotel.

- Check return train times on arrival, as afternoon gaps are real, and keep the louage station as your backup.
