Things to do in Ternate
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ternate
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, driest weather, calmest crossings and best snorkelling and diving visibility.
Wet on paper but holds Legu Gam, the year's great festival, and is worth the rain risk.
Drying out and fine for everything, a good shoulder month.
Wettest stretch, with May the worst bet for the Gamalama summit and boat days.
Wet season combination, though December is rescued socially by the Kora Kora festival.
Quiet and damp with no festivals, and Ramadan falls roughly here in 2026 to 2027.

Think twice about
- Airport and far north coast strip as a holiday base
Not unsafe, but a transit strip with no evening food scene, and travellers report rubbish in the water on the far northern shore.

- Respect PVMBG alert levels and crater exclusions on Gamalama absolutely, and confirm status on the ground.
- Ask for a helmet on every ojek ride, and carry water on lava field and black sand walks.
- Dress modestly away from swimming bays and be discreet with food in public during Ramadan fasting hours.
Ternate travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Fort Oranje alone is thin on interpretation, so fold it into a centre walk instead of giving it a morning.
- You cannot swim at Lake Tolire, so plan swimming for Jikomalamo, Sulamadaha and the south coast.
- At Sulamadaha, walk or boat on to Teluk Sulamadaha bay instead of stopping at the first beach.
- Swim Jikomalamo early to avoid the midday Sunday banana boats near swimmers.
Getting around Ternate: public transport and more
- Fly into Sultan Babullah Airport from Jakarta, Makassar or Manado, about 20 to 30 minutes from the centre.
- Ojek are everywhere and cheap, agree the fare first, and a hired car with driver is the sane default for full days.
- Use Bastiong harbour for Tidore speedboats, not the Sofifi ferry port, and note boats leave when full.
- Use Telkomsel for reliable signal across North Maluku.
