Things to do in Bajawa
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Bajawa
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Core dry season: best roads, clearest Inerie views, most reliable climbing, and the busiest weeks on the overland route in July and August.
Dry season shoulders: generally good travel with fewer visitors, and coffee harvest activity through the middle of the year.
Wet season: greenest hills and water in the Wawo Muda lakes, but slow landslide-prone roads, muddy village tracks and a usually clouded Inerie.
Cold nights all year at 1,100 to 1,200 m, dropping to around 13 to 16 C in the driest months, so pack a warm layer whenever you come.

What to book ahead
- Mount Inerie: a few days ahead
- The Southern Village Walk, Bena to Tololela: a few days ahead
- Riung 17 Islands Marine Park: a few days ahead
- Manulalu Bed & Breakfast: a few days ahead
- Book Manulalu Bed & Breakfast days ahead in the dry season, especially July and August, because it is small and fills.
- Arrange an Inerie guide and a village-loop driver through your hotel the day before, not on the morning itself.
Is Bajawa safe?
- The risks that shape a Bajawa trip are local and practical: winding roads, landslides, the volcano climb and very hot spring water.
- Check MAGMA Indonesia for Inerie before climbing, use a local guide, and do not climb if local guides say no.
- Test hot spring water before sitting down, watch the strong currents where the Malanage streams meet, and supervise children at both springs.
- Carry cash in rupiah, download offline maps, and take travel insurance that covers Flores road travel and hiking, because serious medical care means Ende or further.
Bajawa travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Treating Riung as a Bajawa day trip: 6 to 8 hours of rough driving for a few hours on a boat.
- Trusting optimistic map times anywhere on Flores, and scheduling a fixed flight after a single long road day with no spare day.
- Expecting a luxury tier: Bajawa has none, in hotels, restaurants or tours, and the ceiling is comfortable and simple.
- Planning a specific coffee farm tour in advance: there is no single reliably bookable coffee attraction, so taste in town and take farm visits as offered locally.
Getting around Bajawa: public transport and more
- Allow roughly 4 to 5 hours by car from Ruteng and 4 to 6 hours onward to Ende and Moni, and do not trust map app times on the Trans-Flores road.
- The Bajawa to Riung road is roughly 72 km and takes about 3 to 4 hours each way, so overnight in Riung rather than day tripping it.
- Villages, springs and viewpoints all need wheels: a car with driver for the southern loop, an ojek for single hops, a scooter only for experienced riders.
- Shared cars and buses on the Trans-Flores route leave when full, and a private car with driver is arranged through your hotel.
