- Exclusion zones around named volcanoes, including Mount Ruang north of Bitung, are off limits. Follow local guidance.
- Those volcano exclusion zones do not cover Bitung or Lembeh.
- Follow local earthquake, tsunami and volcano guidance, as North Sulawesi sits on the Ring of Fire.
- Serious medical care is in Manado, so dive within your training and insurance and keep valuables out of sight around the port and markets.
Bitung travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not book a Lembeh dive resort as a cheap beach stay: the price is diving, boats, guides and full board.
- Do not expect coral garden diving in Lembeh Strait, and do not base in Bitung for Bunaken: that is a Manado trip.
- Confirm seafood prices per portion before fish goes on the grill, and carry cash for markets, boats and small restaurants.
- Know the Minahasan extreme dish names, paniki and rintek wuuk, and do not order market dishes you cannot identify.
Getting around Bitung: public transport and more
- Fly to Sam Ratulangi International Airport outside Manado, then take the Manado-Bitung Toll Road via the Danowudu exit, roughly an hour to an hour and a half to Bitung and the resort jetties.
- Agree the airport transfer and its price with your resort when you book, rather than negotiating at arrivals.
- Bitung town, the Ruko crossing, Tangkoko and the mainland shore resorts are separate points, so arrange a car, driver or charter between them.
- Charter a vehicle for Batuputih and Tangkoko, where there is no useful public transport to the park gate.
