Things to do in Balikpapan
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Balikpapan
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, with the least rain, firmest trails and calmest seas for onward Derawan trips.
Good months. Mid August filled Balikpapan hotels in 2024, but the main independence ceremony returned to Jakarta in 2025.
Wettest months, with muddy trails, the worst Bangkirai road and some river trips cancelled on heavy rain days.
What's on
- HUT Balikpapan 10 February
The city anniversary, with parades, cultural performances and food festivals around the centre.
- Indonesian Independence Day at IKN 17 August
The main national ceremony returned to Jakarta in 2025, with a smaller Authority ceremony at IKN, so Balikpapan no longer reliably fills as its overflow city.
- Erau Adat Kutai usually July, dates vary
The great Kutai cultural festival in Tenggarong, combinable with a Mahakam river trip.
Best things to do in Balikpapan
KWPLH BALIKPAPAN (Sun Bear Conservation)
Rescued sun bears, the city mascot, watched from boardwalks above a naturalised enclosure, best at a morning feed.
Kemala Beach
The downtown beach for a sunset walk, calm shallow water and warung food, not for a swim and snorkel day.
Lamaru Beach
The prettier east coast beach, a long pine backed sweep of sand that works best as an early family half day.
Manggar Segarasari Beach
The big local public beach near Lamaru, calm and almost empty on weekday mornings and a festival on Sundays.
Taman Bekapai
The small central park that anchors a 45 minute walk past Monpera monument down to the Klandasan waterfront.
Pasar Klandasan
The waterfront morning market for Bornean fruit, amplang crackers and breakfast bought and eaten as you walk.
Balikpapan Botanical Garden
A large, still maturing garden of Bornean plants that is the easiest quiet green half day inside the city.
Teritip Crocodile Farm
Thousands of crocodiles at close range, fascinating for the curious but with welfare concerns visitors should weigh.
Where to stay in Balikpapan
Balikpapan Superblock / Jalan Jenderal Sudirman corridor
first trip, IKN and families
Malls, waterpark and two complex hotels under one roof, with Grab rides in every direction.
Klandasan / the old centre waterfront
food and local texture
The market, Bandar restaurant row and Kemala Beach at your door, with the bay in front of you.
Sepinggan / airport corridor
early flights, IKN toll road and stopovers
Minutes from the airport and on the right side of town for IKN and the Samarinda highway.
Think twice about
- Kariangau and the Semayang port area
Working port, warehouses and truck corridors with no visitor base, nothing at night and long rides to every sight.
- Pertamina refinery perimeter
A restricted industrial zone of flares, tank farms and checkpoints. Not a place a visitor can or should base.
- Manggar-Lamaru beach strip as a base
Good beaches by day, but a dark, scattered road at night with almost no dining and a long ride from everything else.
- Kampung di Atas Air, Margasari as a base
A poor stilt community with no visitor accommodation. It is a respectful daytime visit, not a place to stay.
