Things to do in Te Anau
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Te Anau
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Peak summer, longest days and everything open, with the busiest Milford Road, worst sandflies and tightest bookings.
Autumn is cooler and quieter, Kepler still in its booking season for much of it, and dinner bookings ease.
Winter empties the town, some restaurants cut days, avalanche closures are likeliest, and the Kepler alpine section needs mountaineering skill.
Spring brings maximum waterfalls, the Great Walks season reopening and the most changeable weather of the year.
What's on
- Kepler Challenge early December
A mountain run over the Kepler Track loop that fills Te Anau with athletes for a weekend.
