Things to do in Tauranga
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Tauranga
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Summer peak: warmest sea, every tour running, festivals stacked, but highest prices, worst traffic and booked out Mount stays.
Autumn sweet spot: warm sea into April, Jazz Festival at Easter, thinner crowds and falling prices.
Winter: mild but wettest and quietest, reduced tour schedules and cold sea. Best for hot pools, golf value and low prices.
Spring: warming, good value shoulder season with changeable weather, and the Garden and Art Festival in November.
What's on
- One Love Festival late January

- Flavours of Plenty Festival March to April
The Bay's food festival of chef events, markets and producer showcases across Tauranga and the Mount.

Best things to do in Tauranga
Mauao
The 232 metre volcanic cone at the harbour entrance, with a base track and summit tracks giving the Bay's best views.
Mt Maunganui Main Beach
A long patrolled white sand surf beach below Mauao, repeatedly voted the best beach in New Zealand.
Pilot Bay
The calm harbour side of the Mount, best for paddleboarding, small children and sunset picnics by the shipping channel.
Moturiki Island
A small reserve island reached by a causeway from Main Beach, with a track to a blowhole and views along the coast.
Mount Hot Pools
Heated salt water pools at the foot of Mauao, the classic end to a beach day and at their best in winter.
McLaren Falls Park
A 190 hectare lakeside park with a waterfall track where glow worms show after dark, ten minutes from the city.

Where to stay in Tauranga
Mount Maunganui
best overall holiday base
Main Beach on one side and Pilot Bay on the other, with the hot pools and the Mount's cafe strip walkable.
Tauranga CBD and The Strand
business, dining and value
The best restaurant cluster and lower prices than the Mount, but quiet at night outside The Strand row.
Papamoa Beach
families, space and value
A long surf beach suburb with roomy, cheaper stays, as long as you have a car for the Mount and CBD.
Think twice about
- Tauranga CBD as a beach holiday base
The centre is hollowed out and empty at night outside The Strand dining row. Fine for food and business trips, wrong for a beach holiday.
- Industrial Mount Maunganui, Totara Street and Hewletts Road port fringe
Port logistics, truck routes and light industry with no holiday feel, a long walk from the beach across busy roads.
- Cameron Road motel strip and 15th Avenue corridor
An older motel row where some properties have been used for emergency housing. Read very recent reviews for the specific property before booking.
- Papamoa East without a car
New and pleasant but far from every sight, with infrequent buses. Do not base here car free.

Is Tauranga safe?
- Swim between the flags at Main Beach and Papamoa, and take rip advice seriously even on calm looking days.
- New Zealand UV is extreme. Sunburn can happen in 15 minutes on a January afternoon.
- Respect Mauao fencing and the 30 metre exclusion zone while the closure lasts, and move away if the landslip alarm sounds.
- Emergency number in New Zealand is 111.
Tauranga travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- White Island landing tours do not exist since the 2019 eruption. Only scenic flights and distant viewing are real.
- Do not plan around climbing Mauao without checking the council closure. It was fully closed in October 2026 with no reopening date.
- When a cruise ship is in port, the hot pools, Pilot Bay and The Elms surge mid morning. Go early or late instead.
- Papamoa is sold as a beach suburb but is long and spread out. Without a car you are marooned there.
Getting around Tauranga: public transport and more
- Tauranga is a car city. The harbour bridge between the CBD and the Mount bottlenecks badly at peak times.
- Bayhopper buses link the Mount, Papamoa and the CBD cheaply, but frequencies are suburban, not metropolitan.
- For Hobbiton, Rotorua and McLaren Falls, rent a car or take an organised tour. There is no passenger train.
- The CBD and the Mount are each walkable internally, and the flat Mount peninsula is excellent for cycling.
