Sylt travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Westerland promenade in peak August: loud, packed, priciest loungers; walk ten minutes either way for space
- Driving the whole island in one day: the north-south road is slow and beach parking fills by 11am; one village per day
- Westerland souvenir shops sell the same shells as any German seaside town
Getting around Sylt: public transport and more
- Rent bikes: the island is flat with an excellent cycle network, and most hotels lend them
- Island buses run Westerland-Kampen-List and Westerland-Hörnum; frequent in summer, thin in winter
- Trains reach Westerland from Hamburg via the Hindenburgdamm in about 3 hours; many visitors skip the car
- Taxis are few and pricey in high season; book the evening before
