Where to stay in Surabaya
Tunjungan / city centre
first trip, all-round base
Walkable to Tunjungan Plaza, Monkasel, Alun-Alun and the Majapahit, with the deepest hotel choice at every tier.
Darmo / Mayjen Sungkono
luxury, quiet and longer stays
Leafier and more residential, with resort style hotels near Bungkul Park, trading walkable sights for space and quiet.
Gubeng
train travellers and value
Around Gubeng intercity station with solid mid range hotels and local food streets, often cheaper than the centre.
Think twice about
- Tanjung Perak port / Pabean Cantikan
A working port and warehouse district with truck traffic, dust, few good hotels and nothing to walk to at night.
- Ampel / Semampir
Fascinating to visit but congested lanes, very limited hotel stock and conservative norms make it impractical as a base.
- Kenjeran / Bulak
Isolated from the centre by 30 to 45 minutes of traffic, with a mudflat coast and thin dining and nightlife nearby.
- Far-west Pakuwon / Lakarsantri
Pleasant for golf, malls and west side business, but a suburban base that puts every sight at the end of a car ride.

Is Surabaya safe?
- Petty pickpocketing in crowded markets such as Ampel and the night markets is the main named risk. Use a crossbody bag.
- Traffic is the real daily hazard. Look both ways even on crossings and do not assume a motorbike will stop.
- Wet season downpours cause localised street flooding from November to April. Build slack into plans.
- On Persebaya matchdays around Gelora Bung Tomo expect road closures, huge crowds and intense atmosphere.
- Dress modestly for Ampel, mosques and temples, with shoulders and knees covered. Alcohol is hotel and rooftop culture, not street culture.
Surabaya travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- House of Sampoerna is listed as permanently closed. Do not build a day around it.
- Kenjeran is not a beach day. It is mudflat with no swimming, good only for sunset and the temple silhouette.
- Surabaya as a half day stopover shows you only traffic and a mall. Give it two days plus a volcano night or skip it.
- Unlicensed Bromo offers from touts risk shared jeeps sold as private, recharged park fees and undisclosed Ijen closures.
- Mall food courts are good, but leaving without rawon, rujak cingur and sate klopo misses the city's best category.
- Midday sightseeing on foot is punished by the heat. Do museums and the Old Town before 10am and streets after 5pm.
Getting around Surabaya: public transport and more
- Download Grab and Gojek before you arrive. Ride hailing is cheap and reliable and avoids taxi negotiation.
- Juanda Airport is in Sidoarjo south of the city. Allow 45 to 90 minutes by toll road depending on traffic.
- Intercity trains are excellent. Use Surabaya Gubeng for most services and Pasar Turi for some northern routes.
- City buses are cheap and modern but slow as a visitor tool. Self driving is not recommended.
