Think twice about
- Isolated farm listings with no named estate
Anonymous farm stays remove every way to check access, lighting and security, and farm roads are unlit with no foot traffic at night.
- Township areas as visitor bases
Kayamandi, Groendal, Langrug and Mbekweni are residential communities, not visitor bases. Visit only on a booked, resident-led tour where one is offered.
- Mountain passes and farm roads after dark
Helshoogte, Franschhoek and Bainskloof passes and unlit farm roads carry tasting drivers, animals and rockfall risk at night. Be off them by dark where you can.

Stellenbosch Winelands travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not try Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl in one day and call it the Winelands.
- Do not plan five or six estates in a day. Two or three with a long lunch is the working pattern.
- Do not assume an estate restaurant serves dinner. Most estate kitchens are lunch-led.
Getting around Stellenbosch Winelands: public transport and more
- Work the region valley by valley: Simonsberg, Banhoek, Franschhoek, Paarl and Wellington, and Helderberg are five coherent days.
- The Franschhoek Wine Tram is Franschhoek only. Everywhere else needs a car, a designated driver or a booked driver.
- Uber and Bolt thin out on farm roads and in Franschhoek and Wellington. Book the return before the meal.
