Things to do in Blyde River Canyon
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Blyde River Canyon
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry winter is the best all round canyon season, with reliable rim views, dry trails and warm floor days.
Autumn is the best compromise, with rain easing, rivers still flowing and trails drying, apart from busy Easter.
Early summer greens the canyon with afternoon storms, so start rim trails and viewpoints in the morning.
Wet summer is lushest but has peak rim mist, closed river crossings and the highest floor malaria risk.

the boat, the dam and warm evenings
Sleeping at Swadini or on the Blyde River puts the jetty, the Hippo Trail and Lowveld river walks on site.
Think twice about
- Escarpment and pass roads after dark and in thick mist
Potholes, trucks, rockfall and sudden mist on the R532, R534 and the R36 Abel Erasmus Pass make night and mist driving the main road risk.
- Blyde River and Blyde Dam water
Hippos and crocodiles live in the river and dam. Never swim there, and never approach a hippo on a shore trail.
- Unfenced rim edges beyond railings
The canyon drop is sheer beyond the viewpoint barriers. Do not climb over railings for photos.
