Is Drakensberg safe?
- Sign the mountain register at every trailhead, start early, and be off exposed high ground before summer afternoon thunderstorms.
- Sani Pass needs a passport and a proper low range 4x4 to ascend, keeps set border hours, and closes in bad weather.
- Avoid rural Berg roads at speed after dark because of livestock, potholes and unlit vehicles. Emergency number from a mobile is 112.
Drakensberg travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Trying to see the whole Berg from one base means hours of winding rural driving, much of it best avoided after dark.
- Eating out is thin: most visitors eat where they sleep, and there is no standalone luxury restaurant tier in the region.
- Valley Bakery closes mid afternoon and earlier on Saturdays, so do not plan it as a dinner stop.
- Tugela Falls runs thin in the dry winter, so time the Sentinel day for summer or autumn flow if the falls are the point.
Getting around Drakensberg: public transport and more
- You need a car: the Central Berg is about 2.5 to 3 hours from Durban, Royal Natal about 3 to 3.5 hours, and Underberg about 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
- The final stretch to Sentinel Car Park is a rough track, so take the Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge transfer instead of a rental car.
- Fuel up in Winterton, Bergville, Estcourt, Mooi River or Underberg, because valley fuel stations are few.
- There is effectively no public transport between trailheads, so use lodge transfers or organised day trips if you have no car.
