Things to do in Kruger
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kruger
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry winter: thinned vegetation, animals at water, clear skies; the classic game-viewing season.
First rains, building heat, newborn impala, arriving migrant birds; shoulder prices.
Wet summer: hot and lush, birding peak, baby animals; game harder to spot in thick bush.
Late-season green with thinning crowds between the summer and winter peaks.
What's on
- Peak dry-season game viewing August to September
Animals concentrate at permanent water; the classic Kruger window.

Think twice about
- The Numbi Gate approach road
Persistent safety incidents on the approach; use Phabeni, Kruger, Malelane or Crocodile Bridge gates instead.
- Mbombela (Nelspruit) as a safari base
An hour or more from the nearest gate; fine for an airport night, not for game drives.
- Lodges marketed as Kruger an hour or more from a gate
Outside the bordering private reserves, that distance costs you the dawn hours.

Is Kruger safe?
- Kruger is very safe inside the gates; the rules are about wildlife and roads: stay in the vehicle and keep gate times.
- The one routing concern is the Numbi Gate approach road outside the park; use the other gates.
- Emergency: police 10111, ambulance 10177, or 112 from a cellphone.
Kruger travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Numbi Gate approach road has persistent safety incidents; use the other southern gates.
- The October 2026 operator change renamed the famous camp restaurants; do not plan around old names.
- Pick the south and center and drive them slowly; distance covered works against animals seen.
- Speeding to a sighting risks real fines; the 50/40 limits are enforced.
Getting around Kruger: public transport and more
- Self-drive is the standard format; rent at Johannesburg O.R. Tambo or Kruger Mpumalanga International.
- Speed limits are 50 km/h on tar and 40 km/h on gravel, and they are enforced.
- Gate opening and closing times are strict; late arrival at your camp means a fine.
- Fuel, shops and ATMs are at the main rest camps only; stock up before a bushveld camp.
- Book SANParks sunrise drives, night drives and bush walks at camp reception, usually the day before.
